Netflix’s new animated film KPop Demon Hunters has sparked mixed reactions with its official merchandise. While international fans showed excitement, Korean netizens criticized the designs as “tacky,” “outdated,” and “too Western.” The high prices also raised eyebrows, with hats costing up to โ‚ฉ62,000 KRW ($45.20 USD).

The film follows a fictional K-pop girl group that fights demons. It gained popularity after topping charts in Korea and other countries. Netflix released merch like graphic tees, hoodies, tote bags, and accessories featuring the group and demon-themed designs. However, many Korean fans felt the style missed the mark.

“Absolutely out of touch.”
“Theyโ€™re outta trend. Revise the merch and come back.”
“If you guys want to sell it at high prices, make them pretty at least so that weโ€™d want to open our wallets. Donโ€™t just put out any old thing.”

Some netizens said the designs looked like a mix of K-pop clichรฉs and Western cartoon tropes. Others called them “cheap” and “uninspired.” The backlash highlights the challenge of creating merch that appeals to both global and local fans.

The film itself has been well-received, but the merch controversy shows a disconnect. Fans expect high-quality, stylish products, especially at premium prices. Similar issues have happened before with other K-pop merchandise, where designs were called “lazy” or “off-brand.”

Netflix has not yet responded to the criticism. The merch is still available for purchase, but it remains to be seen if changes will be made. For now, the debate continues online, with some fans defending the designs while others demand improvements.
