A short clip from a stand-up comedy show in Gurugram has turned into one of the biggest controversies in India this month. The video shows a young man, Himanshu Jangra, telling a story about spending ₹370 on biryani during a date. He then clearly says that because he paid for the meal, he was owed something physical in return.

The audience laughed. The host, comedian Pranit More, laughed too and even gave Jangra prize money. But when the video spread online, the reaction was very different. People called it an example of a dangerous mindset where men feel entitled to intimacy just because they spent money on a meal.

What Exactly Happened at the Show

The incident took place during a crowd interaction segment at Pranit More’s stand-up show. Himanshu Jangra, a 23-year-old web developer from Gurgaon, was invited to speak. He described going on a date with a woman and buying her a plate of chicken biryani priced at ₹370.

He then told the audience, “Maine kaha 370 rupay lage hain, main wasool toh karunga” (I spent ₹370, so I have to get something back).

Jangra went on to explain how he wanted the woman to come to his room. When she refused, he insisted they go to a dark park. He described waiting for nightfall in that park. Throughout his narration, the crowd cheered, and More presented him with the show’s prize money without stopping him or challenging the remarks.

The Immediate Aftermath and Job Loss

Once the clip went viral, backlash hit fast. Viewers accused Jangra of treating women like objects and promoting coercion. Pranit More faced criticism for encouraging the behavior instead of shutting it down.

Vivek Vishwakarma, founder of the Gurgaon-based design firm Starvik Design, announced that Jangra was fired from his job.

“Let me be very clear, the statements shown in those clips are offensive. They are not something I agree with. They are not something our company stands for. What happened outside the workplace has now affected the workplace. That is why we have decided to part ways with him.”

Jangra later deleted his Instagram account. Pranit More also deactivated his account, which had around 3.8 million followers.

Both men issued public apologies. More stated, “The comments made by the audience member do not reflect my views. Looking back, I should have challenged the remark instead of laughing and moving on. That was a lapse in judgment on my part.”

Police Case and Legal Action

The legal response has been serious. Maharashtra Cyber police registered an FIR against Pranit More, Himanshu Jangra, Dr. Sejal Pawar, and others on June 11, 2026.

The case was filed under sections of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS) 2023, including those dealing with obscene acts and statements that outrage the modesty of women, along with section 67 of the Information Technology Act (publishing obscene content online).

Dr. Sejal Pawar was specifically named because of a separate viral clip from another More show. In that clip, she allegedly made disrespectful and obscene remarks about a medical cadaver.

NCW Intervenes with Hearing Notice

The National Commission for Women (NCW) took immediate notice. NCW Chairperson Vijaya Rahatkar wrote to the Haryana Director General of Police demanding action and an Action Taken Report within seven days.

The commission stated that the remarks “glorify sexual coercion and non-consensual conduct towards a woman.” They added that normalizing behavior that “undermines a woman’s consent, dignity, and bodily autonomy has far-reaching consequences for women’s safety.”

The NCW has summoned Pranit More and Himanshu Jangra for a hearing on June 22, 2026, at 4 pm.

Political Leaders Respond

Maharashtra Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis addressed the controversy on June 12. While defending the right to free speech, he drew a clear line.

“The Constitution has given the right to freedom of expression. I follow stand-up comedians. It is entertaining. But everyone should know the limitation. I expect that no one should cross their limits.”

He clarified that freedom of speech ends when it harms the freedom and dignity of others.

Mumbai Police’s Viral ‘Lock Up’ Post and the Zomato Fake Screenshot

Mumbai Police joined the conversation with a social media post that quickly went viral. They wrote, “₹370 gets you one plate of biryani. Our lock-up serves free meals with a longer stay.”

The post received mixed reactions. Shiv Sena (UBT) leader Priyanka Chaturvedi called it “disgraceful” and asked the police to “do better.” Mumbai Police responded, “With due respect to your interpretation, isn’t it the most rightful thing to stand with women and for women?”

Meanwhile, a fake screenshot started circulating online showing a Zomato notification that read, “Biryani bhejdu? Rs 370 ki hai bas” (Should I send biryani? It’s just Rs 370). Zomato officially denied sending any such notification. The company stated, “Biryani is dinner, not consent. The screenshot of the distasteful notification you may have seen with our name is fake. We did not write or send it.”
