Silo Season 3 Episode 1 is now streaming on Apple TV+, and it delivers a major shift for the series. The episode, titled “Who Are You?”, picks up three months after the dramatic season 2 finale. Juliette Nichols (Rebecca Ferguson) survived the fire that trapped her with Bernard. But she is not the same person viewers remember.
The new season of the dystopian drama throws Juliette into a position she never wanted. She is now the mayor of Silo 18. But her new role comes with a heavy price. She cannot remember her past, her time outside the silo, or even the people she once trusted.
Juliette Wakes Up as Mayor But Cannot Remember Her Past
When Silo Season 3 Episode 1 begins, Juliette is alive and living as the mayor of Silo 18. She receives her dinner and daily “vitamins” while being told that the silo is peaceful because she returned after her Cleaning. The people see her as a symbol of hope. She is the first person to survive going outside and come back.
But Juliette does not feel like a hero. She looks in the mirror and does not recognize herself. She has scars on her face and body from the fire, but she does not fully understand what they mean. Her memory is almost completely gone. She cannot remember her time in Silo 17, the people she met there, or even her closest friends from Silo 18.
Robert Sims (Common) and his wife Camille Sims (Alexandria Riley) are now the ones in control. They present themselves as leaders who want unity and democracy. But behind the scenes, they are carefully managing everything Juliette sees and hears. Camille acts as Juliette’s personal advisor and confidante. Robert watches her through hidden cameras.
The episode makes it clear that Juliette’s condition is not natural. She is not simply recovering from trauma. Someone is actively working to keep her from remembering the truth.
Bernard’s Death Was Not an Accident โ Sims Killed Him
One of the biggest reveals in Silo Season 3 Episode 1 is the truth about Bernard’s death. Viewers saw Bernard and Juliette trapped in a fire at the end of season 2. The premiere confirms that Bernard is dead. But the way he died is not what Juliette was told.
Robert Sims tells Juliette a version of events where Bernard died from the fire after his suit failed. But the audience sees a different story. Bernard actually survived the fire. He was still alive after the flames. Robert Sims then choked him to death. This allowed Sims to take control of the silo’s leadership.
After telling Juliette his version of events, Camille asks Robert if he “stuck to the script”. This confirms that they are carefully controlling what Juliette believes. They have created a fake story about Bernard’s death to keep her from asking questions.
Showrunner Graham Yost had previously hinted that season 3 would bring back key words from Bernard and Juliette’s final conversation. The premiere delivers on that promise by showing how those words connect to the larger mystery.
Camille and the Algorithm Are Suppressing Juliette’s Memories
The premiere reveals that Juliette’s memory loss is being caused by more than just trauma. She is being given medication that suppresses her memories. Camille tells Juliette that the pills are vitamins. But they are actually memory-suppressing drugs.
Near the end of the episode, Camille visits a room called the Vault. She speaks to an AI system called the Algorithm. The Algorithm asks Camille to double Juliette’s dose of the memory loss drugs. It wants to make sure Juliette remembers nothing about her past.
The Algorithm believes Juliette still remembers enough to threaten something called the Safeguard Protocol. This suggests there are even bigger secrets waiting to be uncovered in future episodes.
Despite the drugs, some of Juliette’s memories are breaking through. She has flashes of being in the room with Bernard. She starts to remember the crowbar she used to get back into her silo. These brief moments make her question the reality she has been told.
Rebecca Ferguson spoke about Juliette’s struggle in a recent interview. She said:
“There is an enormous conflict within herself as she battles with trying to remember the past. There is a very real conflict between the people trying to fight to bring her back and the powerful few benefiting from Juliette’s memory loss.”
Ferguson also teased a more active Juliette for this season:
“Season 3 is Juliette’s gloves-off moment. Past systems are out. Any belief in the past order is over. Actively shaping the future. Juliette’s still fighting the here and now.”
A Secret Message Points Juliette Toward the Truth
Even with all the control around her, someone is trying to help Juliette. Near the end of the episode, she receives a secret message hidden in her dinner delivery. The note tells her to leave her bowl upside down and go to the marketplace at 2:00. It also says “BURN THIS.”
Juliette follows the instructions and burns the note before anyone can find it. This shows that she is beginning to question her situation. She is not completely under the Sims’ control. Someone inside the silo is trying to bring her back to reality.
Many believe the message could be from Martha Walker (Harriet Walter), who helped Juliette in season 1. But the episode does not confirm who sent it. This mystery will likely play out over the rest of the season.
The Premiere Introduces a Second Timeline Set in the Past
Silo Season 3 Episode 1 does not only focus on Juliette. It also continues the flashback storyline that began in the season 2 finale. These scenes take place centuries before the silos were built.
The flashbacks follow Congressman Daniel Keene (Ashley Zukerman) and his sister Charlotte Keene (Jessica Brown Findlay). Charlotte is a naval pilot who is about to go on a dangerous mission to bomb Iran. She urges Daniel to get on Senator Thurman’s Iran Committee.
During her mission, Charlotte’s squadron flies into a strange cloud. Inside the cloud, a weird gooey substance appears in her cockpit. She touches it, and shortly after, planes start going down around her. Charlotte survives the crash but suffers a brain injury. She wakes up with no memory of what happened.
This parallel storyline connects to Juliette’s situation. Both women have lost their memories. The flashbacks are slowly revealing how the world moved toward the disaster that forced humanity underground. The season is based on the second book in Hugh Howey’s series, titled Shift, which tells the origin story of the silos.
