HBO has officially announced The Last of Us Season 3, renewing the hit series before Season 2 even premiered. The show, based on the popular PlayStation game, will continue adapting The Last of Us Part II, with a focus on Abby’s story.

The renewal came on April 9, 2025, just days before Season 2’s debut. Showrunners Craig Mazin and Neil Druckmann confirmed that the story is too big to finish in one season. They hinted that a fourth season might also be needed.

“There’s no way to complete this narrative in a third season. Hopefully, we’ll earn our keep enough to come back and finish it in a fourth. That’s the most likely outcome.”

Season 2 covered the first half of The Last of Us Part II, focusing on Ellie’s revenge after Joel’s death. Season 3 will shift to Abby’s perspective, showing events from her side.

Actress Catherine O’Hara, who plays therapist Gail, called it “the Abby story.” Fans will see more of the Washington Liberation Front (WLF) and characters like Isaac.

Key cast members returning include:

  • Bella Ramsey as Ellie
  • Kaitlyn Dever as Abby
  • Isabela Merced as Dina
  • Gabriel Luna as Tommy

Filming for Season 3 is expected to begin in mid-2025, likely in Vancouver. However, star Isabela Merced suggested it might start in 2026. If production follows past schedules, the release could be in early to mid-2027.

Season 1 took 18 months from filming to release, while Season 2 took 14 months. If Season 3 starts in early 2026, fans may wait until 2027.

HBO has not confirmed an exact release date yet. But the network is fully supporting the show.

“We’re thrilled to carry the power of Craig and Neil’s storytelling into what we know will be an equally moving and extraordinary third season,” said Francesca Orsi, HBO’s head of drama.

Season 3 might be longer than Season 2, which had seven episodes. Mazin said the story allows for more exploration. Unlike Season 2, which stayed tightly focused on Joel’s death, Season 3 could expand with side stories.

“I think there’s a decent chance that Season 3 will be longer than Season 2, just because the manner of that narrative and the opportunities it affords us are a little different.”

The Last of Us has been a massive success for HBO. Season 1 averaged 30 million viewers, making it one of HBO’s biggest hits. Season 2 continued the trend, keeping fans hooked with its intense storytelling.

While waiting for Season 3, fans can rewatch Seasons 1 and 2 on Max. New updates, including trailers and casting news, will likely come in late 2026.
