Jon Favreau opens up about the scrapped season’s original storyline and how it was supposed to connect to Ahsoka.

For years, fans have wondered what happened to The Mandalorian Season 4. The show’s third season ended in April 2023, and instead of getting another season on Disney+ , Lucasfilm announced a movie called The Mandalorian and Grogu. Many people thought the movie was just the fourth season edited down for theaters. But the show’s creator, Jon Favreau , has now set the record straight about what the original Season 4 was going to be.

The truth is that the scrapped season had a very different story. It was much more connected to the larger Star Wars universe and would have set up major events for another Disney+ show. The movie that is coming to theaters soon is a completely new story built from scratch.

Jon Favreau Reveals The Mandalorian Season 4 Thrawn Storyline

Jon Favreau recently shared new details about the abandoned Season 4 scripts. He explained that before the Hollywood strikes in 2023, he had already finished writing the entire season. The scripts were done and ready to go. But then everything changed.

Speaking to SFX Magazine , Favreau revealed that the original Season 4 was going to focus on Grand Admiral Thrawn . The story would have directly set up the events of Ahsoka Season 2. It was not going to be a standalone adventure for Din Djarin and Grogu.

“There were a lot of characters, it assumed you’d watched the whole show, and it was teeing up what was happening moving into Ahsoka season 2. It was about Grand Admiral Thrawn and following the larger Star Wars storyline.” – Jon Favreau

This means the fourth season was designed as a bridge between shows. It would have pushed forward the main story that Dave Filoni has been building across multiple series. Thrawn , the famous villain from Star Wars Rebels who appeared in live-action in Ahsoka , was going to be a major part of the plot.

Why The Original Season 4 Scripts Could Not Become The Movie

A lot of fans assumed that The Mandalorian and Grogu was just a reworked version of those Season 4 scripts. Favreau made it very clear that this is not true. The two projects are completely different.

The main problem is the difference between television and movies. A TV season has many hours to tell its story. It can take its time and build up characters slowly. A movie has only about two hours. It needs to move faster and end in a satisfying way.

Favreau explained that the Season 4 scripts assumed viewers had watched everything before. They were full of characters from the show’s history. New viewers would have been lost. A movie playing in theaters around the world cannot do that.

“You can’t just take those scripts and turn them into a movie. This is a completely different medium, so I had to start from scratch, essentially.” – Jon Favreau

So Favreau started over completely. He kept some basic ideas, like Grogu training as the Mandalorian’s apprentice. But the overall story, the characters, and the structure are all new and made for the big screen.

What This Means For Ahsoka Season 2 And The Thrawn Story

With the Thrawn plot removed from The Mandalorian , the big question is where that story goes now. The answer seems to be Ahsoka Season 2. Favreau has confirmed that his Season 4 scripts were designed to lead directly into the next chapter of Filoni’s show.

This means the larger Star Wars story about the Imperial remnant and Grand Admiral Thrawn is now fully in Dave Filoni’s hands. Favreau described the difference between the two shows as the difference between officers and foot soldiers. Ahsoka deals with the big picture, the high-level view of what is happening in the galaxy. The Mandalorian and Grogu keeps things at ground level. It is more personal and smaller in scale.

Ahsoka Season 2 does not have an official release date yet. But it is expected to arrive on Disney+ later in 2026. The cast includes Rosario Dawson as Ahsoka, Hayden Christensen returning as Anakin Skywalker, and Lars Mikkelsen as Thrawn.

The Current Status Of The Mandalorian Season 4 Scripts

So what happened to those completed scripts? Favreau says he still has them. They are not destroyed or thrown away. He told Empire Magazine that the entire fourth season is “sitting on my desk.”

However, that does not mean fans will ever see it. The scripts exist, but there are no current plans to produce them as a TV season. Disney and Lucasfilm have shifted their focus to making movies. The Mandalorian and Grogu is the priority now.

Favreau has not completely closed the door on a fourth season. But for now, the story of Din Djarin and Grogu continues on the big screen. The Thrawn storyline that was planned for Season 4 will likely be told in Ahsoka instead.

Release Information For The Mandalorian And Grogu

The Mandalorian and Grogu is scheduled to open in theaters on May 22, 2026. The movie stars Pedro Pascal as the voice of Din Djarin. The cast also includes Jeremy Allen White and Sigourney Weaver in undisclosed roles.

The film will be released in theaters across the United States , United Kingdom , Canada , Australia , India , and other global markets on the same date. It is the first Star Wars movie to hit theaters since The Rise of Skywalker in 2019.

Favreau has said the movie is designed to work for both longtime fans and complete newcomers. You do not need to have watched all three seasons of the show to understand what is happening. The film introduces the characters and their relationship from the beginning.
