The wait for Marvel’s mutant heroes is almost over. X-Men ’97 Season 2 is coming to Disney+ in summer 2026, and fans now know exactly when the show will make its public debut.

Two years after the first season dropped in March 2024, the animated series will return with new episodes. Marvel Studios confirmed the timeline after months of speculation about the show’s return.

The second season picks up right where the season 1 finale left off. The X-Men got scattered across different time periods after saving Earth from extinction. Charles Xavier, Magneto, Rogue, Nightcrawler, and Beast ended up in Ancient Egypt around 3000 BCE. Meanwhile, Cyclops and Jean Grey landed in the year 3960 AD.

X-Men ’97 Season 2 Will Premiere at Tribeca Festival 2026

The official premiere date for X-Men ’97 Season 2 is now clearer than ever. The show will have its world premiere at the 2026 Tribeca Film Festival on Saturday, June 13th at 2:30 PM. The screening runs for 60 minutes.

Tickets for the festival go on sale April 28th. The Tribeca Festival takes place from June 3 to June 14 in New York City.

This marks the first time an animated Marvel series gets such a high-profile festival premiere. The move helps build excitement before the show hits Disney+.

Disney+ Release Date Expectations for Summer 2026

Marvel has not announced the exact Disney+ release date for X-Men ’97 Season 2. However, the Tribeca premiere points to a late June or July 2026 streaming debut.

Industry experts believe Marvel wants to use positive word-of-mouth from the festival to boost viewership. The strategy worked for other Disney+ shows that premiered at festivals before their streaming release.

Brad Winderbaum, Marvel’s Head of Streaming, Television, and Animation, confirmed the 2026 release window earlier this year. He told Collider, “Season 2 of X-Men ’97 is going to be in ’26. We’re working on it now.”

The gap between seasons stretches nearly two and a half years from the first season’s March 2024 debut.

Major Cast Changes and New Characters Joining Season 2

The voice cast will return with familiar names. Cal Dodd returns as Wolverine, Lenore Zann as Rogue, Jennifer Hale as Jean Grey, and Ray Chase as Cyclops. Ross Marquand voices both Professor X and Apocalypse.

Matthew Chauncey took over as head writer after Beau DeMayo left the show. Chauncey has been rewriting scripts originally written by DeMayo. The changes in the story department caused some of the production delays.

The original executive producers Larry Houston, Eric Lewald, and Julia Lewald stay on as consulting producers.

New characters joining the second season include:

  • Sabretooth
  • Lady Deathstrike
  • Havok
  • Polaris
  • Psylocke
  • Archangel
  • Danger

Several new mutants will help Forge and Bishop rescue the missing X-Men. Iceman, Emma Frost, Colossus, Magik, Kitty Pryde, Dust, and Exodus join the rescue mission.

What Happened in the Season 1 Finale Leading to Season 2

“Something, or someone, yanked our friends through time. And now, we gotta go rescue the X-Men.” – Bishop

The season 1 finale titled “Tolerance is Extinction โ€” Part 3” ended with most of the X-Men missing and thought dead. Bastion tried to destroy Earth by crashing Asteroid M into the planet. The X-Men stopped him but got thrown across different time periods.

Forge spent six months searching for his teammates without success. Bishop finally revealed that the X-Men got sent through time rather than killed. A board in Forge’s lab showed the new team forming to save the original X-Men.

Wolverine and Storm’s fates remain unknown at the end of season 1. Where they ended up will likely be a major story point in season 2.

Multiple Timelines and Time Periods in Season 2

X-Men ’97 Season 2 will take viewers across three different time periods. The story jumps between ancient Egypt, the present day, and the distant future of 3960 AD.

Supervising director Jake Castorena promised the animation quality will reach new levels. “Season 2 is going to be some of the most beautiful work I think we’ll get to see in episodic TV animation,” he said. Each time period will have its own distinct visual style through colors and environments.

The ancient Egypt setting introduces En Sabah Nur before he becomes the villain Apocalypse. The future timeline features an older Nathan Summers, who grows up to become Cable.

Release Details for Global Audiences

X-Men ’97 Season 2 will stream exclusively on Disney+ worldwide. Viewers in the United States, United Kingdom, Canada, Australia, India, and all other Disney+ markets will get the same release window.

The standard release pattern for Disney+ shows includes one episode per week. The first season had 10 episodes, and season 2 will likely follow the same length.

Marvel already has Season 3 in development. The studio aims for yearly releases for its animated shows going forward. X-Men ’97 Season 3 could arrive as early as 2027.
