The new season of Netflix’s basketball comedy Running Point has a secret nod to Macaulay Culkin that almost didn’t make the final cut. His fiancée and show star Brenda Song recently pointed out a small but meaningful detail from Season 2 that connects back to one of Culkin’s most famous films. The 1991 movie My Girl, which featured a young Culkin, gets a direct shout-out in a flashback scene that explains how two characters became friends. Many viewers might watch right past it, but Song made sure the reference stayed true to her partner’s work. The show’s writers came up with the idea, but Culkin himself had to approve it just days before the season’s release.

Easter Egg Details From My Girl Movie

The hidden reference appears during a flashback that shows Song’s character Ally and Kate Hudson’s character Isla Gordon as college roommates who initially could not stand each other. The two women eventually find common ground while crying together while watching the 1991 drama My Girl, the movie that starred Culkin as Thomas J. Sennett. This moment becomes the turning point in their relationship, changing them from enemies to close friends.

Song explained at the Season 2 premiere on April 15, 2026, at Hollywood’s Egyptian Theatre that the idea came from the writing team.

“That was all the writers. He just signed off on it two days ago. I’m like, ‘Babe, the show’s premiering next week. Sign off on it.’”

The timing was very close. Culkin gave his approval only two days before the press interviews for the show’s launch. The scene serves as a smart way to build the backstory between Ally and Isla while also giving a quiet tribute to Song’s real-life partner.

Brenda Song Jokes About Macaulay Culkin Cameo Pitches

While Culkin appeared on screen in Season 1 as a heckling basketball fan, he does not make a physical cameo in Season 2. Song shared that her fiancé keeps trying to change that. She joked that Culkin offers his services for every new season.

“He pitches himself every season. I love him, but I’m like, ‘Honey, this is my job. Let me live.’ We have Ray Romano. We have Octavia Spencer. And not that he’s chopped liver, but…”

Culkin’s Season 1 appearance happened almost by accident. He was visiting Song on set when someone suggested putting him in the background as a hidden surprise. That small idea grew into a speaking role where he shouted, “Where’s Billie Eilish?!” during a game scene. Song admitted she was not even there when they filmed it because she was getting ready for her own scenes.
