Netflix just dropped Unchosen on April 21, 2026, and viewers are already asking if the British cult thriller will return for another season. The six-episode limited series follows Rosie (played by Molly Windsor), a young mother trapped inside a strict religious group called the Fellowship of the Divine. When an outsider named Sam (played by Fra Fee) shows up, her life takes a dangerous turn.
The streaming giant has not made any official announcement about renewing or canceling the show. Since the series is brand new, Netflix typically waits to see how many people watch before making decisions.
Netflix Has Not Renewed or Canceled Unchosen Yet
The show’s status remains unclear right now. Netflix has not confirmed a second season, but they have also not said the show is ending. This is normal for new releases. The platform usually looks at viewership numbers during the first 28 days after launch.
Unchosen was created by Julie Gearey, who wrote the story after talking with former cult members in the United Kingdom. The series stars Asa Butterfield (from Sex Education), Christopher Eccleston (Doctor Who), and Siobhan Finneran (Happy Valley).
The show is being called a mini-series, which means the story was designed to end after six episodes. But that does not completely close the door on more episodes. Netflix has changed its mind before when shows became very popular.
Cast and Creator Share Thoughts About Continuing the Story
Fra Fee, who plays the mysterious character Sam, talked with Collider about a possible second season. He said he really wants to keep playing this role.
“I would love to continue his journey simply because I hadn’t come across such a brilliant character in so long, really, and I would just love to explore him further. But as you said, it’s a very satisfying end to the show, and if it were to end here, it’s quite a satisfying one. But you know, like anything, if you know these shows, if it’s a big success, you know they’ll want to carry it on, and I think Julie probably has some ideas up her sleeve already.”
Fee also joked about one small problem with returning. He did not like his character’s hairstyle in the cult. He said, “Whenever you’re in that position in that group, the hair is just really lame, but I’d have to get used to that.”
Creator Julie Gearey shared where the idea for the show came from. She told Tudum about meeting a young religious woman at a grocery store.
“I thought, ‘I wonder what her life is like when she goes home. We are a similar age, we have similar-age kids, and yet I’m going my way into the mainstream world, and she’s going left into her world.’”
Gearey also spoke about working with real former cult members to make the story feel true. She said, “It was important to reassure them as much as we could that, firstly, nobody watching the show would ever recognize them, and, secondly, that whatever they had to say about the emotional experience of being involved, we would try to respect and reflect as truthfully as possible within the show.”
What Could Happen in Unchosen Season 2
The first season ends with several storylines still open. Rosie runs away from the community with her daughter Grace. Her husband Adam (played by Asa Butterfield) tries to stop Sam and eventually leaves the place too. Mr and Mrs Phillips (played by Christopher Eccleston and Siobhan Finneran) leave for a fresh start. But Sam becomes the new leader instead of facing punishment for his actions.
This ending has many viewers talking about what comes next. If Netflix decides to make Unchosen Season 2, the story would likely show Rosie trying to build a normal life outside the cult with her daughter. Sam’s story would probably continue as he takes control of the Fellowship of the Divine. The show might also explore whether Adam can fully escape the group’s influence.
The series has received mixed but mostly positive reviews. On Rotten Tomatoes, the first season scored around 60% positive reviews. That is a decent score for a niche thriller about religious groups.

How to Watch Unchosen and What Comes Next
All six episodes of Unchosen are available on Netflix right now. Viewers in the USA, United Kingdom, Canada, Australia, and India can stream the entire first season. The show runs as a complete box set, perfect for binge-watching.
The series marks Asa Butterfield’s first television role since Sex Education ended in 2024. He plays a very different character here, moving away from his comedy role to a darker part.
Molly Windsor, who plays the lead role Rosie, won a BAFTA TV Award for Best Actress in 2018 for her work in Three Girls.
Whether Unchosen gets a second season depends entirely on how many people watch in the coming weeks. Netflix looks at completion rates (how many viewers finish all episodes) and social media discussion. The streaming service has not set any timeline for making a decision.
For now, fans can watch the six available episodes and share their thoughts online. The more people talk about the show, the higher the chances of seeing Sam, Rosie, and the rest of the Fellowship of the Divine return to screens.
