The second episode of the new Ghost in the Shell anime series has arrived, and it brings major changes for Motoko Kusanagi and her team. After the premiere set the stage, Episode 2 moves quickly into action as the squad officially becomes Public Security Section 9. Their first assignment? Tracking down a dangerous hacker who infected a government official with a military-grade virus. The episode, titled “SUPER SPARTAN ii + JUNK JUNGLE i,” aired on July 14, 2026, and fans are already talking about its mix of political drama, cyber action, and surprising humor.
Aramaki Reveals the Real Plan for Section 9
The episode opens with the team processing unexpected news. Their current department has been dissolved. Each member reacts in their own way. Togusa worries about what comes next, while Motoko and others stay calm and even share drinks instead of stressing over the political changes.
That is when Chief Daisuke Aramaki arrives with a proposal that changes everything. He explains that sending Motoko and her team to the orphanage in the previous episode was never random. It was part of a larger government strategy. Aramaki reveals an elaborate plan to create a new security organization that answers directly to the Prime Minister.
This new unit will not follow traditional military ranks. Its main goal is to find crimes before they happen and stop them early. Aramaki makes it clear that the success of this team depends on Motoko and the people she chooses to trust. It is a huge responsibility, but it also gives her complete freedom to shape the unit her way.
Motoko does not hesitate. She accepts the proposal right away, recognizing both the importance of the mission and the trust Aramaki has placed in her. This decision officially sets the foundation for the elite task force that fans of the franchise know will become one of anime’s most iconic security units.
The First Mission: A Political Asylum Case Turns Dangerous
No celebration lasts long in the world of Ghost in the Shell. The team’s first assignment centers on Colonel Malles, an exiled military leader from the fictional Gavel Republic who has requested political asylum in Japan.
The situation gets complicated quickly. During diplomatic negotiations, the Prime Minister’s interpreter becomes infected with the HA-3 virus. This virus is a military AI created during the non-nuclear World War 4. It works as a personality hijacker, turning its victims into dangerous cyberweapons. The virus does not kill the person directly, but it makes them a serious threat.
Aramaki suspects that an unknown hacker is trying to sabotage the meeting. He instructs Motoko and her team to track down the culprit using reverse tracking. The hacker is not caught in this episode, but Motoko gets close.
The Political Game Behind the Asylum Request
One of the strongest parts of Episode 2 is how it handles complicated political situations without dumbing them down. Colonel Malles is not shown as a simple good guy or bad guy.
After his country moved to democracy, Malles lost power. He now lives in Japan while secretly funding rebel forces back home. His homeland still controls valuable platinum deposits. This puts Japan in a tough spot. The government has two choices: grant Malles asylum and lose influence with the new government, or reject him and keep good international relations.
The episode lets viewers absorb these competing interests while weaving them into the cybercrime investigation. It trusts the audience to pay attention instead of explaining every detail.
The HA-3 Virus and the Hunt for the Hacker
Batou is seen keeping watch from within the jungle when Aramaki arrives with news about the case. The hacker gave the Prime Minister’s interpreter the HA-3 virus, and the team must act fast.
Motoko gets called back from her vacation to handle the situation. The episode shows her in a personal moment when she gets the call, adding a layer of humor to an otherwise serious story. Some viewers have noted that these scenes create a contrast with her usual professional image.
The investigation moves forward as the team works to track down the hacker using traceback methods. While they do not catch the culprit in this episode, the hunt sets up a larger conspiracy that will likely unfold in future episodes.
Animation and Production Quality Shine
Science SARU, the studio behind the series, delivers strong animation work in Episode 2. The visual quality remains high, with vibrant colors and smooth action sequences. The episode visual for Episode 2 was designed by Kano Kameda from maxilla. Each episode gets a special poster as part of an ongoing project, with each visual offering an alternative design inspired by the episode’s themes.
The series is directed by Moko-chan, who previously worked as assistant director on Dandadan and contributed to Scott Pilgrim Takes Off and The Heike Story. This marks her first time as a director. Akutagawa Prize-winning author Toh Enjo handles series composition and scriptwriting. The opening theme is “GO GHOST” by King Gnu, and the ending theme is “Blue” by Millennium Parade featuring Saya Gray and Daniel Caesar.
Cast and Voice Performances
The Japanese voice cast brings the characters to life with strong performances. Maaya Sakamoto voices Motoko Kusanagi, Kazuhiro Yamaji plays Daisuke Aramaki, Hiroki Yasumoto voices Batou, and Yuichi Nakamura takes on the role of Togusa. The English dub cast was revealed at Anime Expo 2026, with Suzie Yeung as Motoko, Bill Butts as Batou, Nick Apostolides as Togusa, and Tony Weaver Jr. as Saito.
