Hayden Panettiere opened up about her daughter Kaya and her struggle with alcohol in one of her final interviews before her death at age 36. The actress shared her honest thoughts about motherhood, giving up custody, and the moment she realized she was fooling herself about her drinking.
The “Heroes” and “Nashville” star passed away on August 16, 2026. She leaves behind her 11-year-old daughter Kaya Evdokia Klitschko, whom she shared with former fiancé Wladimir Klitschko.
What Hayden Panettiere Said About Daughter Kaya
In the months before her death, Panettiere spoke openly about her daughter in her May 2026 memoir “This Is Me: A Reckoning” and during an appearance on Jay Shetty’s “On Purpose” podcast.
She described her bond with Kaya as strong despite living apart.
“I love my daughter, and I’m so proud of the young woman she is becoming. I talk to her all the time, and I feel so connected to her.”
Panettiere also shared that Kaya felt like a reflection of herself.
“She’s like a mini-me.”
The actress admitted that not living with her daughter every day was extremely painful. She wrote in her memoir:
“Not being under the same roof with her every day has been the most gut-wrenching experience of my life.”
She also expressed hope that Kaya would one day understand her choices.
“One day she’ll understand my story, and why I wasn’t able to be with her all the time.”
The Traumatic Birth of Kaya
Panettiere revealed that giving birth to Kaya in December 2014 was a near-death experience. She needed seven blood transfusions and three hours of surgery.
During the childbirth, she prayed for her daughter’s safety.
“I closed my eyes and just prayed for my daughter to be okay. I truly was ready to go if it was my time. Kaya being safe and healthy was all that mattered.”
She also recalled saying:
“God, please let me hear my daughter cry. I just want to know that she is okay and if it’s my time to go, I’m okay with that.”
Struggling to Bond with Her Daughter
After Kaya’s birth, Panettiere was diagnosed with postpartum depression. She struggled to feel an immediate connection with her newborn.
“I had always heard that moms feel an instant rush of love, but I didn’t — and I had no idea why.”
She turned to alcohol to cope with feelings of emptiness and shame. This eventually led to an alcohol dependency.
The Painful Custody Decision
In 2018, Panettiere made the difficult choice to give full custody of Kaya to her ex-fiancé Wladimir Klitschko. Kaya was two years old at the time.
Panettiere said the decision was not easy.
“It wasn’t a decision I made lightly, nor was it a decision I even wanted to make.”
She explained that she needed to focus on getting help.
“I was going through a really challenging time in my life… I knew I needed to be able to put her first so that I could get the help I needed and be the mom she needed me to be.”
The actress also addressed the misconception that she abandoned her daughter.
“The idea that anybody would think that I would just give away my child and be okay with it is heartbreaking. Couldn’t be further from the truth.”
‘I Was Fooling Myself’ – Her Honest Confession About Alcohol
Panettiere admitted that she resumed drinking, including vodka, while convincing herself that no one could notice.
“I was fooling myself.”
She wrote this in her May 2026 memoir, reflecting on how she tried to hide her alcohol use.
Panettiere also shared that taking medication for her condition created new problems. She said the medication made her feel like a “zombie”.
Kaya’s Life with Her Father
Kaya has been living with her father in Europe since the custody decision. By 2026, Panettiere said her daughter spoke five languages and had built a full life surrounded by friends and family.
Panettiere maintained a good co-parenting relationship with Klitschko. She frequently visited her daughter and stayed connected through FaceTime.
“I have an incredible relationship with her. I go travel as much as I can. I see her. I do spend a lot of time on FaceTime with her, but we talk about really deep things.”
Wladimir Klitschko’s Tribute to Hayden Panettiere
Following Panettiere’s death, Wladimir Klitschko shared a heartfelt message on Instagram.
“Our family is going through a time of profound shock and grief. She left this world far too soon.”
He promised to honor her memory for their daughter.
“To our daughter Kaya, I will always speak of her mother with respect and make sure she remembers the person she was.”
Klitschko also said:
“Hayden was, although no longer my partner, an important part of my life and the mother of our daughter, Kaya.”
