The hit Apple TV+ horror-comedy series Widow’s Bay is moving forward with its second season, and creator Katie Dippold has shared a positive update on the show’s progress. During a panel at Deadline’s Contenders Television: The Nominees Studio, Dippold gave fans a clear picture of where things stand with the new episodes.
The series, which stars Matthew Rhys as Mayor Tom Loftis, became one of the most talked-about shows of the year after its April 2026 launch. It earned 19 Emmy nominations, including a nod for Outstanding Comedy Series. With the writers’ room now in full swing, Dippold is confident about what lies ahead.
Dippold Says Season 2 Is “Feeling Great” as Writers’ Room Moves Forward
Dippold offered a straightforward progress report on the second season during the Contenders panel. She confirmed that the writers’ room is currently in its third week of work.
“Week 3, feeling great. I think it’s fun. I feel like I always look at Season 1 — what was really hard with that is having to lay all the groundwork. ‘Haunted Island’ sounds silly and terrible, honestly. I’m still happy they all signed up. It’s a tough pitch. I feel like a lot of groundwork was laid in Season 1 so you can buy it. So, it’s making Season 2 much more fun.”
Dippold also made a lighthearted joke aimed at her lead actor, who was sitting beside her during the panel.
“But no Loftis.”
The creator previously announced that the writers’ room would spend around 20 weeks working on the new season. Filming is expected to begin in early 2027. Apple TV+ officially renewed the series for a second season on June 11, 2026, just days before the first season finale aired on June 17.
The Season 1 Finale Set Up Major Questions for Season 2
The first season finale left viewers with several big revelations. Tom Loftis discovered that his son Evan is the last known descendant of the island’s cursed mayor, which places Evan at the center of the island’s ongoing supernatural problems. Another key moment came when Dale found old video reels that showed residents were once sacrificed to keep the island peaceful.
Dippold explained that the first season was mostly about characters accepting that supernatural forces exist around them. She said the second season will explore how they deal with those truths once they fully understand what is happening.
“Season 1 is almost a prequel to living on a haunted island. Season 1 is slowly starting to realize what’s happening. I think there’s much more fun to be had in Season 2.”
She also mentioned that she already has a clear vision for the series’ future, including new mythology, additional mysteries, and the long-term direction for Loftis’ character.
Matthew Rhys’ Welsh Hometown Feels Exactly Like Widow’s Bay
During the same panel, Matthew Rhys shared that his friends and family back in Wales immediately saw the connection between the show’s fictional island and his real-life hometown.
“They said, ‘That is Wales. It’s like that’s just a busman’s holiday for you. There’s nothing different about that. That’s like an average afternoon in Fishguard [Wales].’ So yeah, they were like, ‘Well, of course you did that. That’s where you came from.’”
Rhys was born in Cardiff and has strong family ties to Fishguard, a town in Pembrokeshire, west Wales. His mother’s family comes from Fishguard, and he has described himself as coming from “a long line of mariners”.
The actor has previously said that the show’s setting is heavily inspired by Welsh coastal towns. He joked during an earlier interview that the fictional island is “not Fishguard, but it’s heavily based on it”. The show’s depiction of a community with no WiFi, poor mobile phone signal, and locals who believe the island is cursed matches the kind of remote coastal towns Rhys grew up around.
The Series Became a Breakout Hit With 19 Emmy Nominations
Widow’s Bay quickly became one of television’s most talked-about shows after its April launch. The series landed 19 Emmy nominations, including Outstanding Comedy Series, Outstanding Lead Actor in a Comedy Series for Matthew Rhys, and supporting acting nods for Kate O’Flynn, Dale Dickey, and Stephen Root.
Dippold admitted during a Comic-Con panel that she did not know the show had been renewed for a second season until just before the news went public. She also shared that she remains “terrified” of Reddit but eventually checked the platform and saw that discussions about the show were growing rapidly.
“Seeing that was really shocking.”
The show’s success came as a surprise to many, including Dippold herself. She noted that the comedy worked because the actors played their roles straight and dramatic rather than going for obvious jokes. She also learned to cut unnecessary material after seeing how the first season came together in the editing room.
“In the edit, I just could see, ‘Oh, you actually didn’t need any of this stuff anyway.’ I learned a lot about what you don’t need and getting to things quicker.”
What to Expect From Widow’s Bay Season 2
With the writers’ room actively working on scripts, Dippold has hinted that the second season will dive deeper into the island’s dark history. The finale revealed that the curse traces back to Richard Warren, who made a pact with a demonic entity. Tom now knows that his son Evan is Warren’s final living descendant, making Evan the key to ending the curse.

The final scene of Season 1 added another layer of danger when the church bell tolled eight times, signaling that the island now demands eight sacrifices. Dippold has also teased that there are still unexplored parts of Widow’s Bay and more horrors waiting to be discovered.
The cast for Season 2 is expected to include returning stars Matthew Rhys, Kate O’Flynn, Kevin Carroll, Dale Dickey, Kingston Rumi Southwick, and Stephen Root. Apple has not announced a complete cast list or an official premiere date for the new season.
