The much-awaited sequel Awarapan 2 has taken the box office by storm. Emraan Hashmi’s return as Shivam Pandit has turned out to be a massive commercial success. The film, which released on August 14, 2026, clashed with Sunny Deol’s Batwara 1947 but emerged as the clear winner. According to trade tracker Sacnilk, the movie collected approximately ₹81.75 crore net in India during its opening weekend. This performance marks Emraan Hashmi’s biggest solo launch and his highest-grossing solo film of all time.
The film’s success is even more remarkable given that the original Awarapan (2007) was a box office failure. The sequel surpassed the lifetime collection of the first film within hours of its release. The movie is now being counted among the eighth Bollywood successes of 2026, alongside films such as Border 2, The Kerala Story 2, and Dhurandhar: The Revenge.
Day-Wise Box Office Breakdown
Awarapan 2 showed strong growth over its opening weekend. The film started with ₹22 crore net on its first day (Friday) across 9,033 shows. It then witnessed a major jump on Saturday, which coincided with the Independence Day holiday. Collections rose by 53.4% to ₹33.75 crore net across 10,496 shows.
On Sunday, the film maintained its momentum despite a slight dip. It earned ₹26.25 crore net across 9,401 shows. This brought the total India net collection to ₹81.75 crore. The domestic gross collection reached ₹98.10 crore, while the worldwide gross touched ₹110.10 crore in just three days.
Dominates Box Office Clash with Batwara 1947
The film faced tough competition from Sunny Deol’s Batwara 1947, which released on the same day. However, Awarapan 2 has completely outperformed its rival. By the end of Saturday, the Emraan Hashmi starrer had opened a ₹46.49 crore lead over Batwara 1947 in worldwide gross collections.
While Batwara 1947 also recorded growth on its second day, its India net collection stood at around ₹26.50 crore after three days. In contrast, Awarapan 2 earned ₹26 crore on day three alone, taking its total to ₹81.75 crore. The Sunny Deol film collected only ₹7.25 crore on Sunday.
Emraan Hashmi’s Comeback Story
The success of Awarapan 2 holds special meaning for Emraan Hashmi. The film marks his first clean success in nearly a decade. After a long run of films that failed to make a major impact at the box office, the sequel has given the actor a much-needed commercial comeback.
The film’s reported budget of ₹45 crore makes its early performance particularly impressive. The movie has already turned a profit within its opening weekend. It has become the highest-grossing solo opener of Hashmi’s movie career, which spans over 23 years.
Trade analyst Taran Adarsh predicted the film’s stellar run in an X post. He wrote:
‘DHAMAKEDAAR SATURDAY… Awarapan 2 continues its remarkable run, going into overdrive on Saturday-the Independence Day holiday… The audience has taken to the film, and how! Awarapan 2 is performing exceptionally well across the board, with Tier 2 and Tier 3 centres, along with non-national chains, registering superb occupancies.’
The Nostalgia Factor
The original Awarapan (2007) was not a box office success. It earned around ₹7.75 crore during its lifetime. However, the film gained a cult following over the years through television, music, and word of mouth. Its songs, particularly Toh Phir Aao and Tera Mera Rishta, remained popular long after the film left theatres.
The sequel tapped into this nostalgia effectively. It brought Emraan Hashmi back as Shivam Pandit, the brooding anti-hero that audiences had connected with almost 20 years ago. The film is set 19 years after the original and follows a grief-stricken Shivam as he returns to the criminal underworld while confronting redemption, sacrifice, and rage.
Cast and Crew
Directed by Nitin Kakkar, Awarapan 2 is produced by Vishesh Bhatt and Mukesh Bhatt under Vishesh Films. Emraan Hashmi reprises his role as Shivam Pandit. The film also stars Disha Patani and Shabana Azmi in key roles. The supporting cast includes Puran Gabbi (who plays the antagonist), Anirudh Rawal, Surendar Vicky, Vijayant Kohli, and Atul Kumar. The screenplay is written by Bilal Siddiqui, Vishesh Bhatt, and Sanjay Masoom.
Reimagined Soundtrack
The soundtrack, released under the Sony Music India label, combines reimagined versions of songs from the original with new compositions. Among them are Tera Mera Rishta Continues, recreated by Mithoon and written by Sayeed Quadri, Amaal Mallik’s Yeh Awarapan sung by Arijit Singh, and Ve Junoon composed by Mithoon and sung by Subodhh Sharma. Toh Phir Aao (Dobara) is presented as a modern version of the 2007 hit.
Strong Performance Across Regions
The film recorded a strong performance across Tier 2 and Tier 3 centres. Its run has brought back “House Full” boards at single screens and non-national cinema chains, signalling a significant boost for exhibitors. On Sunday, the film recorded an overall occupancy of 52.83% across 9,403 shows. Morning shows recorded 25.69% occupancy, followed by 60.38% in the afternoon, 68.62% in the evening, and 56.62% at night.
The film has also performed well in international markets. It earned ₹4 crore overseas on Sunday, taking its total overseas gross collection to ₹12 crore. The worldwide collection reached ₹110.10 crore at the end of its opening weekend.
Mixed Reviews from Critics
Despite its box office success, Awarapan 2 has received mixed reviews from critics. The film was appreciated for playing on nostalgia, but the story itself was considered less engaging for many. Cinema Express’s review of the film read:
“Awarapan 2 stands on its own, even though its stance is wobbly. For the millennials there is a lot to cheer for. Hashmi is back in his brood, sporting rexine jackets over black vests. The Bangkok nightlife is gritty, grimy and neon-nostalgic, but what is missing is the depth of Shivam’s angst.”
Box Office Milestones
The film has already achieved several milestones. On its opening day, it surpassed the lifetime business of the original Awarapan, which collected ₹7.75 crore net. By Saturday, it had also surpassed the final collections of several of Emraan’s successful films, including Haq (₹20 crore), Raaz 2 (₹25.50 crore), Ek Thi Daayan (₹26 crore), and Jannat (₹30 crore).
The film is now the third-highest opening weekend grosser of 2026 among Hindi films, after Dhurandhar 2 and Border 2. Interestingly, the top three opening-weekend spots are all occupied by sequels this year.

Monday Performance
On its fourth day (Monday), Awarapan 2 collected ₹9.25 crore net across 10,849 shows in India. The film witnessed a drop of about 64.4% from its previous day’s collection. However, the film’s total India gross collection now stands at ₹109.02 crore, including a total net collection of ₹91 crore domestically. Worldwide, the film has crossed the ₹130 crore mark.
Trade analyst Taran Adarsh noted that the film is expected to benefit from a special discount on Tuesday. He posted on X:
‘#Awarapan2 stays super-strong on the decisive, make-or-break Monday, despite the massive volume of business it generated over the weekend… In fact, Tier 2 and Tier 3 centres have taken to the film in a big way. The discounted ticket offer on Tuesday should once again result in a big number… Will hit the ₹100 cr mark today [Tuesday; Day 5].’
Awarapan 2 has proven that nostalgia, when handled correctly, can be a powerful force at the box office. The film has not only revived a franchise but also given Emraan Hashmi the commercial success he has been seeking for years.
