Andrew Garfield wants people to put down their phones and look around. The actor believes there is still wonder in everyday life, and that idea is at the heart of his new family movie, “The Magic Faraway Tree.”
The two-time Oscar nominee plays Tim Thompson in the film, which is based on Enid Blyton’s famous children’s books. The story follows a family that moves to the countryside and discovers a magical tree that takes them to different fantasy worlds.
Garfield said the movie’s themes of nature, imagination and community feel very important right now. He pointed out that many people spend too much time looking at screens and have lost touch with the world around them.
“I think people are craving connection and community and a kind of reconnection to the earth and to each other,” Garfield said.
Why Garfield Said Yes to the Project
Garfield joined the film after reading the script written by Simon Farnaby, who also worked on “Paddington 2” and “Wonka.” The actor said Farnaby’s writing made him feel strongly about the project.
“I really just adore his sense of whimsy and heartfeltness and magic and joy,” Garfield said. “I felt very, very passionate about it.”
In an interview with Filmfare, Garfield called the script the funniest one he has ever read. He praised Farnaby for making the story feel human while keeping the magic of Blyton’s original world.
“He’s so precise with his writing and yet so open and fluid to people making it their own,” Garfield said. “He’ll take an idea and make it a thousand times funnier and better and more human.”
The Story Behind the Magic Tree
“The Magic Faraway Tree” tells the story of Tim (Garfield) and Polly (Claire Foy), a married couple with three children. Polly quits her job as an electronic engineer, and the family loses their company-owned apartment in the city. They move to the English countryside, where their children find a massive tree filled with unusual characters.
Every time the children climb the tree, they reach a different fantasy land. These include the Land of Goodies, the Land of Spells and the Land of Birthdays. The adventures bring the whole family together and help them rediscover what matters most.
Director Ben Gregor said they built real sets for the film, including an edible set for the Land of Goodies. He wanted the young actors to see and touch the environments instead of using only computer graphics.
Cast and Characters
The movie brings together an impressive group of actors. Alongside Garfield and Foy, the cast includes:
- Nonso Anozie as Moonface
- Nicola Coughlan as Silky, the kind-hearted fairy
- Jessica Gunning as Dame Washalot
- Jennifer Saunders as Grandma
- Rebecca Ferguson as Dame Snap
- Sir Michael Palin as one of the mystical wise men
- Sir Lenny Henry in a supporting role
Delilah Bennett-Cardy, Phoenix Laroche and Billie Gadsdon play the three Thompson children.
Garfield’s First Family Film
This movie marks Garfield’s first film made specifically for kids and families. The actor explained why he chose this project.
“We need really good tactile, family films right now,” Garfield told TODAY.
Garfield, known for playing Spider-Man and roles in films like “Hacksaw Ridge” and “The Social Network,” said he is drawn to stories about community, nature and human connection.
“Anything that keeps me awake to the remembering of the connection that we have to each other, the connection we have to nature, how we are all interconnected,” he said.
A Modern Take on a Classic Story
The film updates Enid Blyton’s 1940s books for today’s audiences. Screenwriter Simon Farnaby brought the story into the modern world while keeping the values and excitement of the original adventures.
Director Ben Gregor said the movie has an important message without being too serious.
“It’s not a preachy thing, but it does say go outside and climb a tree and have some fun. Get off the screens,” Gregor said.
Claire Foy, who reunites with Garfield nearly 10 years after they starred together in “Breathe” (2017), said updating the story was important.
“To bring them up to date and to allow a larger audience in is really important,” Foy said.
Worries About Technology and Social Media
Garfield has spoken openly about his concerns regarding technology and social media. He told the BBC that he worries about the impact these platforms have on young people.
“The more we live through this technological revolution, the more we understand that our consciousness is being hijacked,” Garfield said. “Our attention, a valuable commodity, is being commodified and is being used and abused by tech companies.”
He said people need to work on taking back their attention and reconnecting with nature. Claire Foy agreed and said the issue affects everyone, not just young people.
“We think we’re in control but we’re not,” Foy said.
Nicola Coughlan admitted she struggles with social media and has deleted her accounts. She now only downloads apps when she needs to post something.
Finding Magic in Ordinary Life
For Garfield, the movie’s message goes beyond the fantasy elements. He believes people can find wonder in their everyday surroundings.
“I think it’s all around us,” Garfield said. “There are so many things to be in awe of on this planet.”
He summed up the film’s main idea in a simple way.
“There’s magic in the ordinary,” Garfield said.
The actor grew up reading Enid Blyton’s “The Famous Five” but had not read “The Faraway Tree” series as a child. His mother introduced him to “The Hobbit” instead. He listened to the audiobooks after receiving the script and found them very soothing.
