The latest episode of Star Trek: Strange New Worlds Season 4 delivered one of the most unusual stories in franchise history. Episode 5, titled “Level Five Transporter Accident,” dropped on Paramount+ on August 20, 2026. The episode placed Spock (Ethan Peck) in charge of the USS Enterprise after a transporter experiment went wrong and turned the entire crew into puppets.

The episode was first teased at San Diego Comic-Con in 2025. Fans had been waiting for this moment, and the show delivered a wild ride filled with humor, emotion, and a surprising twist.

Scotty’s Experiment Goes Wrong

The trouble started when Scotty (Martin Quinn) decided to test the limits of transporter technology. He wanted to break a record for the longest distance an object had ever been transported. For his test subject, Scotty chose a creepy childhood puppet named “Little Ricky” that his brothers used to scare him with.

Scotty planned to transport the puppet directly into the quarters of a former Academy rival on another starship. Spock was helping Scotty with the experiment when everything went wrong. The transporter malfunctioned and created a “level five transporter accident”.

The accident turned everyone aboard the Enterprise into sentient puppets. Only Spock remained human because he was on a shuttle craft at the time of the accident.

Spock Takes Command of the Enterprise

With the entire crew transformed into puppets, Spock became the only person capable of leading the ship. He had to figure out how to reverse the accident while dealing with a new threat.

Orion pirates, led by guest stars Rachael Harris (“Lucifer”) and Joe Lo Truglio (“Brooklyn Nine-Nine”), hijacked the Enterprise. The pirates easily took over because the puppet crew could not fight back effectively.

Captain Christopher Pike (Anson Mount), now a puppet, was ejected from an airlock by the Orions. He soon discovered that puppets do not need oxygen to survive. This gave him an idea. The puppet crew could use their new forms to their advantage.

The puppet Starfleet officers worked together to take back the Enterprise from the Orion pirates.

Spock’s Personal Struggles Take Center Stage

While the puppet chaos unfolded, Spock was dealing with his own emotional battles. The episode revealed that Spock had been struggling after the events of Season 4, Episode 2, “The Griffin Incident”. He was showing signs of trauma and wanted to reconnect with his logical side.

Spock planned to spend time on Vulcan to find peace. He contacted T’Pring (Gia Sandhu), his former fiancée, and asked for her help in understanding logic better. She agreed to help but made one request: no hijinks.

The transporter accident clearly violated that request.

Spock was also dealing with a breakup. La’an (Christina Chong) ended their relationship earlier in the episode. She told him, “There is no tragedy in a romance reaching its natural conclusion”. This added to Spock’s emotional burden.

The Surprise Twist: It Was All a Dream

The episode’s ending revealed a major twist. The entire puppet adventure was actually Spock’s dream. He woke up to find T’Pring at his bedside.

T’Pring explained that Spock was the only one affected by a transporter accident. Scotty’s experiment had caused a problem, but it only impacted Spock. The puppet dream came from Spock’s extreme distress after his experience on the USS Griffin.

The dream revealed deeper truths about Spock’s feelings. He felt constant pressure from his crew relying on him. He also seemed to want a break from the chaos of the Enterprise. The dream helped Spock realize that logic was his true path forward.

Ethan Peck, who plays Spock, shared his thoughts about the episode. He admitted he was skeptical when he first heard about the puppet idea.

“We’ve gotten a few episodes over the years where I’m like, ‘Really? Are you sure? Are you serious?’ And this is definitely one of those”.

Peck said the puppets showing up on set made the episode feel real. He was the only main cast member who did not become a puppet. He found a positive side to that situation.

“I guess I was a little bit disappointed, but also I was the one that got to act with all of them. No one else got to act with the puppets”.

Behind the Scenes: Jim Henson’s Creature Shop Brings Puppets to Life

The puppet episode required special effects work from Jim Henson’s Creature Shop. Jordan Canning directed the episode. She had previously worked on the “Fraggle Rock” reboot at Apple TV. Her connection helped bring the Henson team on board.

Jason Weber, creative supervisor at Jim Henson’s Creature Shop, spoke about the collaboration.

“There’s quite a Henson presence at Dragon Con, Comic-Con, all of these things, and of course ‘Star Trek’ is there too. So there’s always been this mutual admiration between our cultures, if you will. To be able to finally jump in and work with them was an amazing experience. We had a blast”.

The puppet team created 3D renderings of each character. Each puppet had exaggerated features from the real actors. For example, Pike’s puppet focused on his signature hair and strong shoulders.

Fan Reactions and Critical Response

The episode received mixed reactions from critics and fans. Some praised the creativity and humor. Others felt the puppet concept did not work as well as expected.

Den of Geek called the episode “completely ridiculous and surprisingly heartfelt”. The review noted that Strange New Worlds has always played with different genres, from musicals to film noir. The puppet episode fit that pattern of pushing boundaries.

IGN had a more critical take. The review said the episode “mostly doesn’t” work. The reviewer felt the puppet voices were jarring and the concept felt recycled from other shows.

ScreenRant described the episode as “brilliantly cuddly, if flawed”. The review highlighted how the episode was really about Spock and his emotional journey.

Gizmodo noted that the episode had been teased for a long time. The review said the puppet episode finally arrived and delivered the expected chaos.
