Yash’s upcoming pan-India film Toxic: A Fairy Tale for Grown-Ups has cleared its biggest hurdle before hitting theatres. The Central Board of Film Certification (CBFC) has given the movie an ‘A’ (Adults Only) certificate without ordering any cuts. The decision has surprised many people online, especially since the film is known for its heavy violence and adult content.

The board only asked the makers to make two small changes, which involve muting and replacing certain words in the Kannada version and adjusting the English subtitles. The film will also carry the mandatory anti-smoking and anti-drinking warnings. Other than that, not a single scene has been removed.

This news has created a lot of buzz on social media. Many users are amused and confused by the CBFC’s decision, especially because the same board recently cut a kissing scene from the Hollywood film Spider-Man: Brand New Day. The internet is now comparing how the censor board handles violence in Indian films versus kissing scenes in Hollywood movies.

CBFC Clears ‘Toxic’ With A-Rating and Minor Modifications

The CBFC cleared Toxic for its theatrical release last week. According to the official certification, the film runs for 3 hours and 12 minutes. The movie has been shot in both Kannada and English.

The board asked the makers to mute and replace two words or phrases in the Kannada version. Similar changes were made to the English subtitles. The statutory anti-smoking and anti-drinking warnings will also be added.

Beyond these minor changes, the CBFC did not demand any cuts. The ‘A’ certificate means the film is restricted to adult audiences only.

This decision is notable because Toxic is being promoted as a dark, violent action drama with mature themes. The film has faced criticism for its sexual content and graphic violence. Despite this, it passed the censor process with almost no changes.

UK Censors Give ‘Toxic’ 18+ Rating for Strong Violence and Sex

While the Indian censor board cleared Toxic without cuts, the British Board of Film Classification (BBFC) gave the film a strict 18+ certificate. The BBFC described the film as containing “strong bloody violence, sex”.

The British board gave Toxic its highest possible ratings in several categories. Violence, sex, and injury detail all received five out of five. Threat and horror, language, drugs, sexual violence, sexual threat, and suicide and self-harm each received four out of five.

These ratings suggest Toxic features stronger sexual content and more graphic injury detail than Dhurandhar: The Revenge, which had lower ratings in those areas.

Internet Users Compare ‘Toxic’ Clearance to Spider-Man Kiss Scene

The CBFC’s decision quickly became a talking point on social media. Many users compared the clearance of Toxic with the board’s recent decisions on Hollywood films.

The CBFC recently cut an 8-second romantic kissing scene from Spider-Man: Brand New Day featuring Tom Holland and Zendaya. The film was cleared with a UA 13+ rating, where such scenes are strictly banned.

One social media user joked about the situation, writing:

“They have a problem with Spider-man kissing only….that’s harmful for our culture lol.”

Another user added:

“There was no kiss, so no cuts were needed. CBFC has clear priorities.”

Some users also questioned why Toxic escaped cuts when Dhurandhar, another violent action film, reportedly faced several cuts before its release. One Reddit user asked:

“Isn’t this film being considered far more violent than Dhurandhar? How come there were more cuts in Dhurandhar than this one?”

The contrast became even more noticeable because UK censors reportedly demanded more cuts for Toxic than for Dhurandhar.

Users Question CBFC’s Priorities on Violence and Women’s Portrayal

The discussion also turned towards how the film portrays women. Some viewers raised concerns about imagery and dialogues that they believe objectify female characters.

One Reddit user took a direct swipe at the censor board, commenting:

“CBFC goes blind when it comes to women being objectified.”

The film has been in the news for its intimate scenes and sequences that appear to show women in a not-so-favourable light through imagery and dialogue.

The CBFC’s decision to clear the film without cuts has added another layer to the conversation surrounding Toxic. Users are questioning why the board is strict about kissing scenes in Hollywood films but allows graphic violence and adult content in Indian movies.

Yash Warned That ‘Toxic’ Is Not for Children

Yash, who leads the film and is also a co-writer, had already warned audiences that Toxic is not meant for children. He made this clear during an appearance on Aap Ki Adalat.

The actor said:

“Children shouldn’t watch this film. They should stay at home. It hasn’t been made for children, and that’s very clear. Adults know what is right and wrong. They can choose what they want to see, what they want to learn from the film, and what they don’t want to do in life. But the film is very genuine and has a deep story.”

Yash also pointed to the film’s tagline, A Fairy Tale for Grown Ups, as a clear indication of who it is meant for. He added that the film is not for children or adults with a child’s mindset.

‘Toxic’ Set for Massive Release on August 26

Toxic is scheduled to release in theatres on August 26, 2026. The film is expected to receive a massive global release across around 12,000 screens.

Directed by Geetu Mohandas, the film features a strong ensemble cast. Yash leads the film alongside Nayanthara, Kiara Advani, Huma Qureshi, Rukmini Vasanth, and Tara Sutaria.

The film’s official plot follows a gangster dealing with questions of loyalty, morality, and personal redemption in a post-independence Goa marked by violence and jealousy.

Advance bookings for the film opened on August 21. The movie will be released in Kannada and English, with dubbed versions in Hindi, Telugu, Tamil, and Malayalam.

The film was initially scheduled to release on March 19 but was postponed twice before the makers fixed the final date of August 26.
