Sri Gouri Priya is making waves in Tollywood, and her story is one that many can relate to. She is a local girl from Secunderabad who grew up watching Telugu films in single-screen theatres. Now, she is starring in major movies and earning love from audiences across the country. Her recent film Chennai Love Story has become a big success, and she is finally getting the recognition she always dreamed of.
In a recent interview, the actress opened up about her journey from being a regular college student to becoming a leading lady in the Telugu film industry. She shared how her love for cinema started in her childhood and how everything fell into place for her.
A True Secunderabad Girl at Heart
Sri Gouri Priya might have played a Tamil girl in her latest movie, but she is a Secunderabadi through and through. She was born and brought up in Secunderabad and has never forgotten her roots.
“I was born and brought up in Secunderabad. I used to watch a lot of films in theatres because I am a film buff. So, I grew up watching Telugu films, listening to the music. And then, someday, all the stars and the universe kind of aligned for me, I guess. Somehow, magically, I found myself in the Telugu film industry. It’s a very special feeling, and I am grateful for it.”
Growing up, she spent many weekends watching movies at single-screen theatres in RTC Cross Roads. She was a regular at those crowded cinema halls, soaking in the atmosphere of fan frenzy. But back then, she never planned to become an actress. She was just a film buff who enjoyed watching stories unfold on the big screen.
The Role That Changed Everything
Gouri Priya has been part of several films before, including Mail (2021), Writer Padmabhushan (2023), and the comedy hit MAD (2023). But it was her role in Chennai Love Story that brought her widespread fame.
The movie, which also stars Kiran Abbavaram, tells the story of a woman who turns to alcohol after being left at the altar on her wedding day. It is a challenging role that required a lot of emotional depth. Gouri Priya knew right away that she had to do it.
“When I heard the script, my only thought was that if I don’t say yes, it’ll be the biggest mistake of my life. Our director, Ravi Namburi, and producer-cum-writer Sai Rajesh wrote great points we don’t usually bring up in love stories. As a young artist trying to find her place, I felt great responsibility towards essaying Nivi.”
She played the character Nivedita, or Nivi, with such honesty that audiences connected with her deeply. The role was physically and emotionally draining. One particular scene, the graveyard scene, was especially difficult to perform. But her hard work paid off.
Chennai Love Story’s Big Success
Chennai Love Story released in theatres on July 24, 2026. The film got a positive response from the start. It went on to collect nearly ₹50 crore at the worldwide box office. The film’s unique interval twist, where the hero dies, became a talking point among viewers.
The movie also had a strong repeat audience. People watched it multiple times in theatres. Gouri Priya says the love she received after the film’s release made her feel like people had accepted her as their own.
“After Chennai Love Story’s release, I feel like people have owned me. They treat me like their own, like someone from their home, like a sister or a friend.”
OTT Release on SonyLIV
For those who missed it in theatres, Chennai Love Story started streaming on SonyLIV from August 21, 2026. The film is available in multiple languages, including Telugu, Tamil, Kannada, Malayalam, and Hindi. This makes it accessible to a wider audience across India.
The OTT release is great news for fans who want to watch the film again or see it for the first time. With love stories, it is always hard to predict how the audience will react. But in this case, the emotion of the story resonated with people, and the film became a hit.
From Miss Hyderabad to Tollywood Star
Before entering films, Gouri Priya was a regular student. She studied management at St. Francis College in Hyderabad. In 2018, she participated in a beauty pageant and won the Miss Hyderabad title. It was a surprising turn of events for someone who never planned to be in front of the camera.
She also trained in Carnatic music and took part in school cultural activities. These experiences helped her get over stage fear and express herself better. She even appeared in a singing reality show and had small roles in films like Fidaa before getting her big break.
The pandemic changed her plans. Like many students, she wanted to pursue a master’s degree in the United States. But when the world came to a pause, an opportunity to act came her way. She took it, and the rest is history.
Breaking the Stereotype
One interesting thing about Gouri Priya is that she is a Telugu-speaking actress from the Telugu states. In Tollywood, it is rare to find female actors who are local and speak the language. For decades, the industry has been dominated by non-local actresses.
But Gouri Priya says she has not faced any problems because of this. In fact, she has met many directors and producers who specifically look for Telugu-speaking girls for their projects. She feels the industry has been welcoming to her.
“I’ve met many directors and producers who specifically look for Telugu-speaking girls for their projects. In that sense, I’ve personally found the industry to be quite welcoming.”
She is part of a new wave of homegrown talent making a mark in Tollywood. Along with actresses like Meenakshi Chaudhary, Bhagyashri Borse, and Srinidhi Shetty, she is helping to change the face of the industry.
What Matters Most to Her
For Gouri Priya, the character matters more than anything else when choosing a film. She wants to play roles that have depth and meaning. She does not want to be restricted to just urban or rural roles. She believes stories from all places matter.
“I don’t want to be restricted as an actress who only plays urban or rural roles. I believe stories from all places matter, whether they’re set in a rural village or abroad. That’s why I strive to bridge that gap by choosing diverse roles that reflect this variety.”
She also believes in bringing honesty to every role. Whether she is working in Telugu or Tamil films, her job is to bring truth to the character. This approach has earned her respect from both audiences and filmmakers.
Fan Love and Recognition
After the release of Chennai Love Story, Gouri Priya started getting messages from people who saw themselves in her character. Many women related to Nivi’s pain and struggles. That feedback meant a lot to her.
“A lot of people sent me messages saying, I see myself in her, and things like that. That’s when I felt, okay, I’ve done something right somewhere to get all this love.”
Her role in MAD also made her popular among younger audiences. People often come up to her and say, “You are MAD!” She has to clarify that she is from the movie MAD, not that she is crazy. But she takes it as a compliment that people remember her for her roles.
