The ongoing dispute between Ranveer Singh and the makers of Don 3 has taken a significant new turn. The actor’s father, Jagjit Singh Bhavnani, has officially stepped into the legal battle. He recently met with officials from the Indian Motion Picture Producers Association (IMPPA) to challenge Excel Entertainment’s ₹45 crore damages claim against his son.
The meeting, which took place on Tuesday, marks a major development in the controversy that has been surrounding the actor’s sudden exit from the much-anticipated franchise film. Bhavnani submitted documents and supporting evidence to the producers’ body, formally presenting Ranveer’s side of the case.
Father Submits Plea to IMPPA Over ₹45 Crore Claim
Jagjit Singh Bhavnani approached the Indian Motion Picture Producers Association and submitted a formal plea contesting the financial claim made by Farhan Akhtar and Ritesh Sidhwani’s production company. The association’s legal team will now review all the documents and evidence before deciding how to proceed.
IMPPA President Abhay Sinha confirmed that the meeting went smoothly. He stated that the association would take the next step after carefully examining the plea submitted by Ranveer’s father. Sources indicate that Ranveer’s legal team had already expressed their willingness to participate in the proceedings.
The submission from Ranveer’s side comes after Excel Entertainment had earlier presented their case to IMPPA. The production house provided the actor’s signed contract, promotional material featuring him, and a message where Ranveer had expressed excitement about starting work on Don 3.
How the Don 3 Dispute Began
The controversy traces back to August 2023, when Don 3 was officially announced with Ranveer Singh taking over the iconic role from Shah Rukh Khan. Khan had played the character in the first two films, released in 2006 and 2011. A promotional video at the time introduced Ranveer as the new Don.
Problems emerged after the success of Ranveer’s film Dhurandhar at the box office. Reports suggest that the actor informed Excel Entertainment that he did not wish to continue with the project. His decision reportedly came just weeks before a large crew of over 200 members was scheduled to travel abroad for the first shooting schedule.
Excel Entertainment then took the matter to the Federation of Western India Cine Employees (FWICE). The producers presented their side before Ranveer’s team was asked to respond.
FWICE Non-Cooperation Directive and Withdrawal
The situation escalated significantly in May when FWICE issued a non-cooperation directive against Ranveer Singh. The federation had invited the actor to present his side, but they claimed he did not cooperate with the process.
However, the directive was withdrawn just eight days later on June 3. The decision came after discussions involving IMPPA, the Producers Guild of India, and CINTAA. FWICE cited the employment that a Ranveer-led film would generate for thousands of workers as a factor in their decision.
FWICE President BN Tiwari expressed support for the actor at the time, stating that the film industry stood with him. He said, “On behalf of the Federation, we would like to request Ranveer Singh to come and sit with us. This film industry family is yours, ours, everyone’s.”
Ranveer’s Silence and Legal Response
Throughout the entire controversy, Ranveer Singh has maintained public silence. His team released a statement on his behalf, emphasizing that he deliberately stayed quiet about the matter.
The statement read, “Ranveer Singh holds the highest regard for the film fraternity and for everyone associated with the Don franchise. Throughout the recent developments surrounding Don 3, he has consciously chosen to maintain silence, believing that professional discussions and personal equations are best handled with dignity, maturity and mutual respect.”
Ranveer’s lawyer had previously questioned whether IMPPA had the jurisdiction to intervene in the matter. However, with his father now meeting the association and submitting documents, there appears to be a willingness to engage with the process.
IMPPA Reviews Both Sides of the Dispute
With Jagjit Singh Bhavnani’s meeting now complete, IMPPA has submissions from both parties. The association’s legal team will carefully examine all documents and evidence before determining the next steps.
The ₹45 crore claim remains the central point of the controversy. Excel Entertainment’s reported damages claim against Ranveer has kept the dispute unresolved despite earlier interventions from industry bodies.
IMPPA is now attempting to broker a resolution between the two sides. The association is expected to assess both sides’ claims thoroughly before deciding how the matter should proceed.

While the Don 3 dispute continues, Ranveer Singh has already started work on his next project. The actor began shooting for Pralay, a zombie thriller directed by Jai Mehta, which went on floors in Mumbai last week. The film also stars Kalyani Priyadarshan.
The shooting location was reportedly shifted from Australia to Mumbai. Reports suggest the change was made so Ranveer could stay close to his wife, Deepika Padukone, as the couple prepares to welcome their second child.
The film marks Ranveer’s first project since the success of Dhurandhar. The tentative release date of Pralay has not been announced yet.
