The doctors of Sacred Heart Hospital are checking back in with a mix of fresh romances, familiar faces and some heavy personal struggles. Scrubs returns for its second revival season on ABC with a two-episode premiere on Wednesday, September 30, 2026, at 8 p.m. ET. Episodes stream the next day on Hulu and Disney+.
Zach Braff (J.D.), Sarah Chalke (Elliot) and Donald Faison (Turk) are back as series regulars. The new season picks up after the events of Season 1, which ended with J.D. and Elliot divorced but still working together, Turk feeling burnt out as Chief of Surgery, and Dr. Cox receiving a serious diagnosis.
J.D.’s Fast-Moving Romance With Charlie
J.D. is single again and moving quickly into a new relationship with Charlie, played by Rachel Bilson. Charlie first appeared in the Season 1 finale as a hospital visitor who hit it off with J.D.
Braff said J.D. is going “a little fast and furious” with her. Turk notices this and tells his best friend he is moving too fast and needs to slow down. Faison explained that J.D. is “a little rusty with his courtship” and is “going all in a little too much.”
The fast pace of J.D.’s new romance makes Turk look at his own marriage. Faison said Turk realizes he has not been putting romantic effort into his relationship with Carla. “He’s just playing husband,” Faison said. Turk decides to try things like “choreplay” to bring back the spark.
Elliot’s Ex Returns and Her Neuroses Come Back
Elliot is also stepping back into the dating world. Scott Foley returns as Sean Kelly, Elliot’s on-again, off-again ex-boyfriend from the original series. Sean is a marine biologist who works with dolphins.
Chalke said the writers brought Sean back to shake up Elliot’s life. In Season 1, Elliot was shown as a confident, mature doctor. The arrival of Sean brings back her more nervous and chaotic side. “We brought some of the batsh*t back,” Chalke said.
Braff added that the show has taken “the batsh*t dial in Elliot and put it back to normal.” For longtime viewers, this means the return of the Elliot who worries, overthinks and reacts strongly to personal situations.
Watching J.D. build a new romance also makes Elliot think about her own future. Chalke said Elliot starts to look at Charlie and J.D. and thinks, “Maybe I do want that. Maybe I do want something like that.”
The contrast between the three friends’ romantic lives is a running theme in the early episodes. Braff said the first three episodes set up “the difference in all of our lives.” J.D. is a bachelor, Turk has been married for many years, and Elliot is testing the dating waters again.
Turk’s Burnout and Marriage Challenges
Turk’s storyline in Season 2 deals with two main problems. First, he remains deeply burnt out from his job as Chief of Surgery. This was first shown in the revival’s series premiere, when Turk told J.D. he felt “no joy” in his position.
The second problem is his marriage. Turk realizes he has gotten too comfortable with Carla, played by Judy Reyes. Seeing J.D. go all out for Charlie makes Turk understand he has not been doing the same for his wife.
Faison said Turk wants to make Carla happy and feels like he is failing her if he does not. This pushes him to try new things, even if they are awkward. Carla is dealing with her own changes, including menopause, which was addressed in Season 1.
Reyes remains a recurring cast member in Season 2. She also stars in the ABC series High Potential, which has been renewed for a third season.
Dr. Cox Becomes a Patient
John C. McGinley returns as Dr. Perry Cox, but his role has changed. In the Season 1 finale, Dr. Cox was diagnosed with microscopic polyangiitis, a rare and incurable autoimmune disease. He will continue visiting Sacred Heart in Season 2 as a patient receiving treatment.
Braff said the story of Dr. Cox’s former students rallying to help him is something the show wants to continue. “We want to keep Dr. Cox, Johnny C around,” Braff said. The show plans to feature him in different ways because the audience and the cast love him.
McGinley is also a series regular on Rooster, a new HBO series from Scrubs creator Bill Lawrence. Braff admitted that scheduling is “a little tricky” because of this, but the team is working to keep Dr. Cox involved.
Cast Changes and New Faces
Season 2 brings several changes to the cast. Ava Bunn, who plays intern Dr. Sam Tosh, has been promoted to series regular. Joel Kim Booster (Dr. Kevin Park) and X Mayo (Nurse Raymond) are not returning.
Keyla Monterroso Mejia joins as a new surgical nurse named Mimi. John Higgins from Saturday Night Live has a major recurring role as Grant, a new doctor who becomes a rival for J.D. Tamera Mowry-Housley will guest star as Dr. Steffie, a pediatric doctor who tries to convince Tosh to choose pediatrics as her specialty.
Neil Flynn returns as The Janitor in a recurring role. Ken Jenkins (Dr. Kelso) is not expected to return. Braff said the team respects Jenkins’ age and that a comeback is “a bit of a big ask” right now. He added that he will keep trying to make it happen.
