Taylor Swift has given fans a major surprise by debuting a song from her upcoming album Reputation (Taylor’s Version) in the latest episode of The Handmaid’s Tale. The re-recorded version of “Look What You Made Me Do” played during a key scene in the show’s sixth season.

The song appeared in Episode 9 as the character June Osborne, played by Elisabeth Moss, led a rebellion against the commanders of Gilead. The powerful moment matched the defiant tone of Swift’s 2017 hit. Fans quickly noticed the vocals sounded different—confirming it was the new Taylor’s Version.

Elisabeth Moss, who is also an executive producer on the show, shared her excitement about using Swift’s music.

“I’ve been wanting to use a Taylor song for many years on the show and we finally found the perfect spot for a track from her, and I’m so glad we waited because there could not be a more perfect song for a more perfect moment. Taylor has been such an inspiration to me personally. As a Swiftie myself, and I think I can speak for [co-star] Yvonne [Strahovski] and our entire cast as well, who are all Swifties, it’s such an honor to be able to use her music in the final episodes of our show.”

The show’s editor, Wendy Hallam Martin, explained why the song was a perfect fit.

“Our badass main character June in this scene, really was saying ‘look what you made me do’ and the song couldn’t have been more on point. A perfect pairing. When I laid the song up against the scene, it just landed perfectly thematically, rhythmically and magically hit all the edit points which sometimes happens if it’s meant to be.”

This marks one of the first full previews of Reputation (Taylor’s Version), which Swift has been working on as part of her mission to re-record her first six albums. She lost the rights to her original masters when her former label, Big Machine Records, was sold to Scooter Braun in 2019.

Since then, Swift has released Taylor’s Version re-recordings of Fearless, Red, Speak Now, and 1989. Only Reputation and her 2006 debut album remain. Fans have been eagerly waiting for the next re-recording, and this sneak peek has sparked excitement.

Swift previously teased a snippet of “Look What You Made Me Do (Taylor’s Version)” in a 2024 docuseries about the New England Patriots. Another re-recorded track, “Delicate (Taylor’s Version),” was used in The Summer I Turned Pretty in 2023.

Fans are now speculating that Swift might announce Reputation (Taylor’s Version) soon. Some clues suggest a possible reveal at the American Music Awards on May 26. Swift’s website recently had a sale where the first letters of the items spelled “AMAs”, hinting at a big announcement.

Social media exploded with reactions after the episode aired.

The original Reputation album was released in 2017 and marked a darker, edgier era for Swift. The lead single, “Look What You Made Me Do,” spent three weeks at No. 1 on the Billboard Hot 100. The album itself topped the Billboard 200 for four weeks.

Swift has been dropping hints about the re-recording for months. She wore a daisy-covered dress on Mother’s Day, referencing lyrics from “Don’t Blame Me”. In a 2023 interview with Time, she compared her re-recording project to collecting “horcruxes” and “infinity stones”, showing her determination to reclaim her music.

With The Handmaid’s Tale featuring the first full-length preview, fans believe the official release of Reputation (Taylor’s Version) could be just around the corner. The show’s final season provided the perfect dramatic backdrop for Swift’s powerful anthem, making this one of the most exciting music moments of the year.
