Kajol is set to star in a new horror film titled MAA, which has surprised everyone by getting a UA 16+ rating from the censor board. Most horror movies in India get an A rating due to scary or violent scenes, but MAA has been approved for viewers aged 16 and above. The film releases in theaters on June 27, 2025.

The Central Board of Film Certification (CBFC) did not ask for any cuts in the film, which is rare for a horror movie. The board only requested a longer disclaimer and details about the film’s themes, including anti-girl child practices and human sacrifice. The movie’s title must also be shown in Hindi as per CBFC rules.

MAA is directed by Vishal Furia, known for his work in horror films. It is produced by Ajay Devgn’s Devgn Films and Jio Studios. The film is part of the same horror universe as Shaitaan (2024), which also had a UA rating.

The story follows a mother, played by Kajol, who goes on a road trip with her daughter. Their journey turns into a nightmare when they find a cursed tree linked to evil spirits. Kajol’s character must fight supernatural forces to save her family.

The film has a runtime of 2 hours and 15 minutes (135 minutes). Alongside Kajol, the cast includes Ronit Roy, Indraneil Sengupta, Yaaneea Bharadwaj, and Jitin Gulati. After its theater release, MAA will stream on Netflix after eight weeks.

Kajol was last seen in Lust Stories 2 and Do Patti. Her last theatrical release was Salaam Venky in 2022. She has expressed interest in doing a full comedy film next.
