The creator of the iconic Breaking Bad universe recently shared his personal thoughts on where his most famous characters ended up after the cameras stopped rolling. In a reflective conversation, Vince Gilligan imagined new lives for Jesse Pinkman, provided updates on Skyler White, and even joked about a presidential pardon for Saul Goodman.

Where the Characters Are Now
Vince Gilligan recently sat down for an interview where he was asked to imagine the present-day lives of the characters from his acclaimed shows, Breaking Bad and Better Call Saul. He provided a thoughtful and often humorous look into the futures of the people fans have followed for years.
Jesse Pinkman’s Quiet Life in Alaska
For Jesse Pinkman, Gilligan hopes he has found the peace he was searching for. The movie El Camino, which serves as a direct sequel to Breaking Bad, ended with Jesse finally escaping his traumatic past and driving away to start a new life in Alaska.
Gilligan imagines that Jesse is still in Alaska. He suggested that Jesse might have “a little bit of money squirreled away” so he wouldn’t be forced to take just any job. He even recalled Jesse’s past mention of wanting to be a bush pilot, picturing him possibly flying people to remote hunting camps in a small plane. Most importantly, Gilligan stated, “I hope wherever he is, he’s happy,” adding that Jesse “had a good heart” despite his many mistakes.
Saul Goodman’s Prison Life and Potential Pardon
The fate of Saul Goodman, born Jimmy McGill, was sealed in the finale of Better Call Saul, where he confessed to his crimes and was sentenced to 86 years in federal prison. When asked about the character’s future, Gilligan joked, “I think Trump pardoned himโฆ I think he’s out.”
He further imagined a freed Saul Goodman returning to his old ways, perhaps even “selling stuff on TV” through infomercials. However, actor Bob Odenkirk has a different view, stating that if there were another show, “it takes place inside prison.” Odenkirk has said he would reprise the role only if creators Vince Gilligan and Peter Gould were involved, noting they are “some of the best writers who ever worked in TV.”
Skyler White and Walter Jr.’s Paths Forward
Gilligan expressed a hopeful outlook for the White family. He stated, “I hope they’re not where we last saw them,” referencing the bleak and dire situation they were left in after Walter’s death.
For Skyler White, who was shown to have accepted a plea deal with the government, Gilligan imagines she may have rebuilt her life. He suggested she could have “found somebody healthier, better, emotionally healthy for her than Walt was.” He also defended Skyler’s character, explaining that she often gets a “bad rap” from fans but was ultimately trying to protect her family.
For Walter “Flynn” White Jr., Gilligan envisioned him potentially “writing a book about his infamous dad, or maybe he has a podcast.”
Kim Wexler’s Return to Justice
The last time viewers saw Kim Wexler in Better Call Saul, she was living a subdued life in Florida, working for a sprinkler company. Gilligan sees a more fulfilling future for her. He believes that after her final prison visit with Jimmy McGill, she likely “got back into public defending down in Florida.”
He imagines she probably doesn’t make a lot of money, but finds meaning in the work. He also joked that she “dumped the good-natured doofus that we see her dating,” and as a result, isn’t “going to Outback Steakhouse quite as often.” Gilligan believes that doing good work is “more appealing to her now.”
The Final Word on Walter White
The host even presented a fan theory that Walter White might have died earlier in the final episode and the rest was a dream. Gilligan firmly shut this down, calling it a “bummer.” He confirmed that Walter’s death was real, stating, “He died on the floor of that Nazi super lab, having said goodbye to his precious, left his bloody handprint on the cook tank.” He concluded definitively, “What you saw is what you got.”
