After six years of legal negotiations, Channing Tatum and Jenna Dewan have finalized their divorce. A major issue that kept the case in court was a disagreement over profits from the successful Magic Mike franchise.
The Core of the Financial Disagreement
Dewanโs legal team argued that she was entitled to a share of the Magic Mike earnings. Their position was that Tatum developed and co-financed the franchise during their marriage, which lasted from 2009 to 2018. They stated this was done with shared “community effort and marital funds”. Since the project started while they were a married couple, Dewan believed the profits should be considered shared marital property.
Tatumโs side did not agree with this view. The financial value of the Magic Mike brand is significant, including three major films, a Las Vegas live show, a reality series, and various licensing deals. This made determining a fair division complex and contentious.
In court documents, Dewanโs attorneys accused Tatum of prolonging the process. They claimed he was “using every trick in the book to stall this case” and was “depriving Jenna of a fair and equal share”. They also said he was blocking the release of financial documents related to Magic Mike transactions.
Tatumโs legal team denied these claims. They stated the actor had “made exhaustive efforts to settle all issues in this matter without litigation”. They said he had offered “countless settlement proposals” and attended multiple mediation sessions.
Final Divorce and Settlement Terms
The former couple avoided a trial by reaching a private settlement. They were declared legally single in 2019, but the financial terms were only finalized in September 2024.
Key details from the settlement were made public in a court filing on November 26, 2025. The agreement states that Dewan and Tatum are each entitled to 50 percent of the other’s retirement benefits within the Screen Actors Guild producersโ pension plan. This share applies only to the money earned during their nearly nine-year marriage.
Both parties agreed to waive any future claims for spousal support. They also agreed to joint legal and physical custody of their daughter, Everly, who is now 12 years old. The settlement includes a provision for them to meet privately with a judge if any conflicts arise over child support.
Personal Reflections on the Split
Both Tatum and Dewan have largely kept their feelings about the divorce private. In a recent interview, Tatum briefly mentioned the personal difficulty of the split. He called it a “painful break” and acknowledged the challenge of co-parenting.
“It’s really tough not to have your daughter half the time. I wish I could just have her all the time.”
He noted that while the situation was painful, he and Dewan “are good now”. The actor has moved on and is currently in a relationship with model Inka Williams. Dewan has been engaged to actor Steve Kazee since 2020, and they have two children together.
Other Magic Mike Controversies
The dispute with Dewan was not the only conflict associated with the Magic Mike franchise. In 2022, reports surfaced that actress Thandiwe Newton left the set of Magic Mikeโs Last Dance after 11 days due to a fight with Tatum. Rumors suggested the argument was about Will Smith’s actions at the Oscars.
Both Newton’s representatives and director Steven Soderbergh denied these reports. A studio spokesperson said Newton left “to deal with family matters”. Soderbergh called all public stories about the incident “wrong” and stated that keeping the details private was best for everyone involved.
A separate, older feud was confirmed by actor Alex Pettyfer, who co-starred in the first Magic Mike film. Pettyfer stated that Tatum did not like him, partly due to a personal financial dispute involving a friend’s apartment. Pettyfer did not return for the sequel.
