Reports suggest Tom Hiddleston’s Loki is set for a starring role in the upcoming Avengers: Doomsday. This development could place the God of Mischief at the center of the Marvel Cinematic Universe’s next major event. The news points to one of the most significant promotions for any character in the franchise’s history.

How Loki Became a Leading Hero

Loki’s journey has been one of the longest in the MCU. He started as the main villain in 2012’s The Avengers. He later sacrificed himself in Avengers: Infinity War trying to save his brother, Thor. The version of the character audiences have followed most recently is a variant from a different timeline. This Loki starred in his own Disney+ series, where his story concluded with him becoming the protector of the entire Multiverse.

After that powerful ending, many thought Loki’s story was complete. However, his confirmed return in Avengers: Doomsday suggests his new role as a cosmic guardian will be crucial to the next chapter.

Official Team Member Status for Loki

Recent promotional material provides a strong hint about Loki’s status in the new film. At an industry event in Italy, Walt Disney Studios showcased the movie’s massive cast. In a key presentation slide, Loki was grouped with heroes expected to form the new Avengers team. This team appears to be led by Anthony Mackie’s Sam Wilson, also known as Captain America.

The slide placed Loki’s image alongside Chris Hemsworth’s Thor, Paul Rudd’s Ant-Man, Mackie’s Captain America, and Danny Ramirez’s Falcon. Since other slides grouped characters by their known teamsโ€”like the X-Men and the Fantastic Fourโ€”Loki’s placement here strongly indicates he will be an official member of the main Avengers roster. This would mark a historic full-circle moment for the character who was the team’s first enemy.

The Long-Awaited Thor and Loki Reunion

A major emotional draw of the film will be the reunion of Thor and Loki. The Loki variant from the Disney+ series has never met this version of Thor on screen. Thor does not know that a version of his brother is still alive. Avengers: Doomsday will fix this prolonged separation.

The movie will feature the first on-screen reunion of Chris Hemsworth and Tom Hiddleston as their characters in seven years. The brothers are expected to fight side-by-side as fellow Avengers, a dynamic never before seen in the MCU.

Co-director Joe Russo described Doctor Doom as “three-dimensional and one of the most complex comic book characters.”

Loki’s Connection to the Original Series Plan

The direction of Loki’s story in Doomsday may connect to ideas from his solo series. Michael Waldron, the head writer for Loki and a co-writer on Avengers: Doomsday, recently discussed the original ending for Season 1. He revealed it was initially more hopeful, with Loki setting off to explore the Multiverse.

During a fan Q&A, Waldron hinted this original concept might still play out on screen. He stated, “Maybe one day youโ€™ll get to see it instead of read it.”. Given his involvement in the Avengers film, this has led to speculation that Doomsday could incorporate elements of that scrapped, adventurous ending for the character.

New Story Details and a Massive Cast

While the full plot is under wraps, the film will unite heroes from across the MCU and beyond to face Robert Downey Jr.’s Doctor Doom. The cast is one of the largest ever assembled for a superhero film.

A recent rumor suggests a specific scene has been filmed featuring Loki. The rumor indicates Tom Hiddleston filmed a scene set in the home of Steve Rogers and Peggy Carter, where Loki holds a conversation with them. This would be a significant interaction, connecting Loki directly to foundational characters of the MCU.

The confirmed cast includes returning veterans like Sebastian Stan (Bucky Barnes), Letitia Wright (Shuri), and Simu Liu (Shang-Chi). It also integrates characters from the X-Men films, such as Patrick Stewart as Professor X and Ian McKellen as Magneto. Pedro Pascal will debut as Mister Fantastic of the Fantastic Four.

Release Date and Marvel’s 2026 Plans

Avengers: Doomsday is scheduled for release in theaters on December 18, 2026. The film is part of Marvel’s Phase Six and will be followed by its sequel, Avengers: Secret Wars, in December 2027.

Marvel Studios is building excitement for Doomsday throughout 2026. The studio has announced it will re-release Avengers: Endgame in theaters on September 25, 2026. This re-release is strategically placed between the July 2026 debut of Spider-Man: Brand New Day and the December premiere of Avengers: Doomsday, helping to build momentum for the new team-up film.
