One ghost is about to get a turn to feel alive again. The CBS comedy Ghosts is bringing back its signature holiday event, and actor Asher Grodman has confirmed a new ghostly “possession” is at the center of the fun. The annual Christmas special has become a tradition for the show, and the upcoming two-part episode promises to deliver more of the chaos and comedy fans look forward to each year. The special, titled “It’s a Wonderful Christmas Carol,” will air as a one-hour event on December 18.

A Look at the Upcoming Christmas Episodes

The special will follow Sam Arondekar as she prepares for a major television interview on Christmas Eve morning. The interview is with reporter Walter Storm, played by guest star Larry Wilmore, and is presumably about the vampire book Sam co-wrote with the ghost Isaac. However, the logline for the episode hints that things take an “unexpected turn”. In true Ghosts fashion, that likely means a ghost will possess a living person right before the big interview, threatening to derail everything.

While Grodman could not reveal which ghost does the possessing or who they inhabit, he teased the quality of the scene.

“Because we’re on Christmas, I’ll say, there’s just a possession coming around the corner that’s just so, so well done”.

The episode title, “It’s a Wonderful Christmas Carol,” strongly suggests the story will draw inspiration from classic holiday films like It’s a Wonderful Life and A Christmas Carol. Grodman explained that the writers used a familiar holiday movie structure to explore the core relationships of the show, calling the two-parter “fantastic” and “a joy to make”.

The Show’s Growing Holiday Tradition

The Christmas possession is a tradition that started back in Season 2 with the episode “The Christmas Spirit”. In that story, the Viking ghost Thorfinn possessed Sam’s body. The tradition continued in Season 4’s “A Very Arondekar Christmas,” which featured a double possession: basement ghost Nancy possessed Sam, while the ghost Pete accidentally entered the body of Sam’s husband, Jay.

This year’s special will also feature the return of several familiar faces. Photos from the episodes confirm that Carol, Pete’s widow who was “sucked off” to the afterlife in the Season 5 premiere, will be back at Woodstone Manor. Actor Utkarsh Ambudkar, who plays Jay, has also teased the return of the Puritan ghost Patience, played by Mary Holland.

“You will not believe what Patience is doing, specifically in our Christmas episode. It is terrifying,” Ambudkar said.

Another photo from the special hints at a possible wedding between the ghosts Hetty and Isaac, adding another layer of festive surprise to the event.

What to Expect From the Rest of Season 5

Before the Christmas special airs, fans have two more episodes to enjoy. On December 11, Season 5, Episode 8 titled “The Life and Times of Esther Greene” will air. This episode will focus on the ghost Alberta as Pete tries to discover why she changed her name, forcing her to reveal a hidden truth. The episode will also see the return of the eccentric podcaster Todd Pearlman, who becomes newly obsessed with Jay.

Following that, a Thanksgiving episode titled “Planes, Shanes, and Automobiles” is scheduled for November 20. This marks the show’s first-ever Thanksgiving-themed episode, expanding its holiday offerings.

The one-hour Christmas special “It’s a Wonderful Christmas Carol” will air on Thursday, December 18. Fans should note the special time: it will start at 9:00 PM ET, a half-hour later than the show’s usual time slot, with the second part airing at 9:30 PM ET. New episodes are available to watch live on CBS and can be streamed live or on-demand the next day through Paramount+.
