Like Stephen on the show, this man was often dishonest and involved with other women. Lovering continued seeing him even after college, when he was living with another girlfriend, always promising he would leave her.
“I’ve been so hesitant – and scared – to talk about the ‘real’ Stephen, because while there is certainly a person who inspired his character, that person isn’t actually the character,” Lovering wrote, drawing a clear line between inspiration and fictional storytelling.
The relationship ended only when the man decided it was over, not through any pivotal moment of clarity for Lovering. Writing the novel became a cathartic process for her to finally understand the dynamic she had been trapped in. She transformed her personal pain into a story that has since resonated with countless readers and viewers who see fragments of their own experiences in Lucy’s story.
Bringing Real Pain to the Screen
Translating this personal story to television involved another layer of real-life inspiration. Showrunner Meaghan Oppenheimer built upon Lovering’s foundation by pulling from people in her own life and from the world of reality TV.
Oppenheimer stated that for Stephen’s character, she drew from people she has known and friends she has watched in similar damaging relationships. For Lucy’s perspective, she tapped into her own memories of being in a relationship that was not healthy, yet difficult to leave. “I pulled on people in my own life for the most part,” Oppenheimer said. “I think unfortunately [I] have known a couple people like that and have seen a lot of friends in similar relationships.”
Interestingly, Oppenheimer also cited the reality series Vanderpump Rules as an inspiration, calling it “the Succession of reality TV.” She admired the show’s portrayal of messy, charismatic people making consistently poor decisions, a vibe she wanted to capture in the friend group dynamics at the center of Tell Me Lies.

The series, which first premiered on September 7, 2022, is currently in its third season. Season 3 debuted on January 13, 2026, and continues to follow the fallout of Lucy and Stephen’s choices as they move further into their post-college lives. New characters have been introduced, such as Costa D’Angelo as Alex, a psychology graduate student, and Iris Apatow as Amanda, a college freshman. The story continues to explore complex themes of obsession, guilt, and the long shadow of early adulthood trauma.
