For more than a decade, Caitriona Balfe has brought Claire Fraser to life on the hit Starz series Outlander. Now, as the show airs its eighth and final season, the actress is opening up about the intense emotional weight of saying goodbye to the character and the emotionally taxing months it took to film the last episodes.

Balfe recently revealed that filming the final chapter of the beloved time-travel romance required more than just acting skills. It demanded a period of deep personal processing after the cameras stopped rolling. The star explained that after spending nearly a year wrapped up in the world of Fraser’s Ridge, she and her co-stars needed to take significant time away to decompress and let go of the roles that defined their careers.

An Emotionally Taxing Nine Months

Speaking to PEOPLE magazine at the season 8 premiere in New York City, Balfe, 46, described the experience of filming the final season as an emotionally taxing nine months. She explained that the pressure to honor the story and the fans weighed heavily on the cast.

“We felt so much responsibility to make it right, and everything felt heightened,” Balfe said, referring to her long-time co-star Sam Heughan, who plays Jamie Fraser. The actress noted that the production schedule was intense, and when it finally wrapped, the entire cast needed to step away from the bubble they had lived in for years.

“We all went and did something right after,” she shared, detailing the unique ways the cast chose to decompress. “I went off and did a retreat, and Heughan went and climbed the Himalayas. Sophie Skelton went to Africa, Richard Rankin learned how to fly.”

Balfe described the process of leaving the show as a kind of necessary ritual. “I think we all had that initial… I wouldn’t say exorcist, but it’s like that process of releasing it,” she explained. For her, the priority was to process the end of the journey in a healthy manner.

“I wanted to process it and I wanted to honor the experience of the character by letting it go, in a healthy way,” Balfe said. “I think you can maybe make yourself a bit mad sometimes if you don’t sit in the experience for a while.”

The Final Scene: I Was Sobbing

In a separate interview with IGN ahead of the season premiere, Balfe went into deeper detail about the actual moment filming ended. She recalled that the final scene she shot with Heughan was not just any scene. It was a lengthy, seven-page dialogue set in Claire and Jamie’s bedroom.

“It was so strange,” Balfe remembered. “You never really know how you’re going to feel.” She explained that the scene was filled with double meaning about goodbyes, and legacy, and all of these things, which made the acting process increasingly difficult as the day wore on.

As the hours passed, the set began to fill with people. Cast members, producers, studio executives, and crew gathered to witness the final moments of the Fraser’s journey. The presence of the crowd, combined with the weight of the dialogue, took a physical toll on the actress.

“It just got harder and harder,” she said. “Every time you say those words, you find this deeper meaning in it that has resonance, not just for the character, but for you and for your journey.”

By the time the director yelled cut, Balfe was overwhelmed. “I was having spasms in my forehead and face because I was such an emotional wreck,” she admitted. “I was sobbing like a… I don’t know.”

Despite the tears, the moment was also celebratory. Champagne was brought out, and Balfe went around the room hugging everyone while still crying. “It was really special. This has been such an incredible journey and it changed all our lives, so it felt momentous,” she said.

More Than Just Acting: Balfe Takes the Director’s Chair

While Balfe is saying goodbye to Claire Fraser on screen, she expanded her role behind the camera for the final season. The actress directed the second episode of Season 8, titled Prophecies.

Balfe had been interested in directing for several seasons and got her start with second unit work on Season 7. When the opportunity to direct a full episode for the final season came up, she jumped at it.

“It was the most fun, it’s been incredible to work with Sam and everybody else in this capacity,” Balfe told Radio Times. She noted that after playing the character for over a decade, stepping into the director’s role gave her a fresh perspective on the story she knew so well.

Sam Heughan praised his co-star’s work behind the camera. “As she said, Caitriona knows the show and she’s a brilliant actress as well. She knows how to give notes, she’s very complimentary, even when she shouldn’t be,” Heughan joked. “Honestly, couldn’t think of a better way to kick off the season – she’s just wonderful to work with.”

Taking a Physical Souvenir

When it was time to pack up Claire Fraser’s belongings for good, Balfe decided to take a few keepsakes. At the season 8 premiere, she revealed that she kept Claire’s rings.

“I had a lot of weddings. I had a lot of marriages. I deserved the hardware,” she joked with PEOPLE.

What Fans Can Expect in the Final Season

The eighth season of Outlander premiered on March 6, bringing the story of Claire and Jamie to a close. According to Balfe, the premiere includes a shocking moment for fans involving the mystery of Faith, the daughter Claire and Jamie lost in Season 2.

“When we open up the season, I think we find out a lot more about potentially what happened, and we see that there’s quite a shocking scene in which Claire does something that I think is very, very shocking,” Balfe told IGN.

The actress also teased that the final season brings some answers for fans, as well as new locations and a lot of reunions that will excite viewers.

New episodes of Outlander Season 8 air Fridays on Starz in the United States. For viewers in the UK, the series streams on MGM+ via Prime Video.
