The world of Stranger Things is coming back to life. But this time, it is in a whole new form. Netflix is getting ready to drop Stranger Things: Tales From ’85, an animated series that takes fans back to Hawkins, Indiana. The show is set to release on April 23, 2026 on Netflix.
The new series takes place in the winter of 1985. This timeline fits right between the events of Season 2 and Season 3 of the original live-action show. The Upside Down is quiet, and the kids are finally enjoying normal life. But something new is waking up under the snow. The gang has to pick up their flashlights and solve a fresh mystery.

For people who want to jump into this new show, you do not need to remember every single detail from the original. But knowing what happens in Seasons 1 and 2 will make the animated series much more enjoyable. The show uses those earlier events as a launchpad.
Why You Should Rewatch Seasons 1 and 2 Before April 23
Stranger Things: Tales From ’85 picks up right after the ending of Season 2. In the final episode of the second season, Eleven closes the big gate at Hawkins Lab. That was a huge moment. The gate was the main way the monsters from the Upside Down got into the real world. Once it closed, everything seemed to go back to normal. The animated series starts at this exact point of peace and quiet.
The showrunner, Eric Robles, said that figuring out how to include Upside Down creatures was the biggest challenge. Since the gate is closed, the team had to get creative. They came up with new kinds of monsters. The official description explains that the kids have settled into a normal life of Dungeons and Dragons and snowball fights. But something scary wakes up. They have to stop it before the town gets hurt.

If you watch Season 2 again, you will remember the Snow Ball dance at the very end. That is where Mike and Eleven kiss for the first time. The animated series starts right at that moment of young love and happiness. It makes the sudden danger feel much more jarring.
Meet the New Voice Cast for the Hawkins Crew
The original actors from the Netflix show are not voicing the animated characters. A brand new group of voice actors is taking over. Brooklyn Davey Norstedt is voicing Eleven. Luca Diaz is taking on the role of Mike. Benjamin Plessala is playing Will. Elisha “EJ” Williams voices Lucas. Braxton Quinney is Dustin. Jolie Hoang-Rappaport is voicing Max.
There are also some familiar adults joining the cast. Brett Gipson will voice Chief Hopper. Broadway star Jeremy Jordan, known for Supergirl and Newsies, is voicing Steve Harrington.
A completely new character is also joining the group. Odessa A’zion voices Nikki Baxter. She is a transfer student with a punk-rock look who becomes close with the gang. The show also features Janeane Garofalo and Lou Diamond Phillips in supporting roles.

A New Mystery Without the End of the World
Fans of the original show know that the stakes usually get very high. Usually, the world is in danger. That changes in Stranger Things: Tales From ’85. The kids are not trying to save the entire planet. They are just trying to save their town.
Eric Robles explained that this was a deliberate choice. The show is not an action show only, nor is it just a comedy. It has elements of both. He said the series keeps the feeling of real danger. He explained that bad things can happen to anyone, which makes the danger feel very real for the kids.
The story focuses on the Hawkins Investigators Club. Dustin comes up with the name. It is his way of making their mission official. He wants the group to protect Hawkins without asking the adults for help.
Watch the First Two Episodes in Theaters First
If you do not want to wait for April 23, you have another option. Netflix is teaming up with AMC Theatres for a special early release. The first two episodes of Stranger Things: Tales From ’85 will play in theaters on April 18, 2026.
The two episodes have a combined runtime of about 55 minutes. The screening will happen in 34 AMC theatres across 20 states in the US. The Paris Theatre in New York and the Netflix House in Philadelphia will also show the episodes. This is a smaller release compared to the Stranger Things finale, which played in 600 theaters. But it gives hardcore fans a chance to see the animation on a big screen before it hits streaming.
