Lisa Kudrow recently opened up about the dark side of working on the hit 1990s sitcom Friends. The actress, who played the quirky Phoebe Buffay for ten seasons, said there was definitely mean stuff happening when the cameras were not rolling. She shared these details in a new interview with The Times of London.

Kudrow described how the shows writing team, which was mostly men, behaved very badly toward the cast. She said the writers would say harsh things if actors messed up a joke or did not get a big laugh from the live audience. It created a stressful environment behind the scenes of one of the most popular TV shows in history.

Brutal Comments During Live Taping Nights

Filming Friends in front of 400 people was already difficult. Kudrow explained that the writers added extra pressure. If an actor messed up a line or the joke did not land perfectly, the writers got angry. She recalled hearing them say nasty things about the actors when they failed to get the perfect response.

“If you messed up one of these writers’ lines or it didn’t get the perfect response, they could be like, Can’t the b*tch f***ing read? She’s not even trying. She f***ed up my line.” – Lisa Kudrow to The Times

She admitted that the environment could be brutal. However, she tried to ignore it because the writers worked very hard. They stayed at the studio until 3 a.m. writing jokes for the show. Kudrow said her attitude was to let them say whatever they wanted behind her back because it did not really matter in the end.

Writers Crossed The Line With Late Night Talks

The harsh criticism was not the only problem. Kudrow shared that the conversations inside the writers room were often very wrong. She said the male writers would stay up late and cross a line by discussing very personal things about the female stars. The topics were not about work but about their private fantasies regarding her co-stars.

“We know that back in the room the guys would be up late discussing their s*xual fantasies about Jennifer and Courteney. It was intense.” – Lisa Kudrow

She specifically named Jennifer Aniston and Courteney Cox as the targets of these talks. Kudrow used the word intense to describe how uncomfortable it was. This behavior is a clear example of how workplace rules were different in the 1990s compared to today.

This Is Not The First Complaint About Friends Writers

Lisa Kudrow is not the first person to speak badly about the Friends writers room. A former writers assistant named Amaani Lyle sued Warner Bros. Television back in 1999. She said she faced racist and sxual harassment while working on the show. Lyle claimed she had to listen to the writers talk about their sxual fantasies regarding Aniston and Cox.

Lyle also said the writers made demeaning comments about actresses. The case went to court. In 2006, the California Supreme Court decided that the speech was part of the creative atmosphere needed to write an adult comedy. They ruled that the comments were not directed at Lyle, so the writers did not break the law.

These past allegations match exactly what Kudrow described in her new interview. It confirms that the behavior was well known by people who worked on the set. The legal case from the early 2000s shows that this was a serious issue that the studios fought against.

Fans React To The Shocking Revelations

Fans of the show are reacting strongly to Kudrows new interview. Many people on social media said they are disappointed to learn how the writers treated the cast. Others pointed out that Kudrow and the other stars earned $1 million per episode in the final seasons, and questioned why these issues were not raised publicly while the show was still on the air.

Some commenters noted that the actress has spoken fondly of her castmates and her overall experience on the show many times before. They feel it is interesting that she is sharing these negative stories now, decades after the show ended. Kudrow previously told The Independent that she was treated like just the sixth Friend by her agency while the other cast members got more attention.
