SM Entertainment addresses the news about ex-NCT member Taeil, who is facing quasi-rape charges involving an intoxicated woman.
Earlier today, Korean media outlets reported that Taeil, who departed from NCT earlier this year, has been charged with quasi-rape of an intoxicated woman. According to sources, Taeil was prosecuted on September 12, without detention, over allegations that he engaged in sexual activity with a woman who was unable to resist due to intoxication.
SM Entertainment’s Statement
In response to these reports, SM Entertainment issued a brief statement, saying:
“It is difficult to comment as the matter is currently under investigation.”
This is the first official response from the agency since Taeil left the group in August, following reports that his removal was linked to serious allegations. At that time, SM Entertainment had acknowledged the existence of unspecified sexual crimes but did not provide further details.
Details of the Charges
As per the reports, Taeil is accused of assaulting an intoxicated woman with two non-celebrity accomplices. Quasi-rape, a term used under South Korean law, involves sexual acts performed on an individual who cannot consent due to intoxication or other impairments.
Previous Allegations and Timeline
The news of the quasi-rape charge follows earlier reports from August, when SM Entertainment removed Taeil from NCT and NCT 127. Back then, SM confirmed the seriousness of the situation but did not reveal details. The incident in question is believed to have occurred in June, with the investigation being conducted over several months. In September, the case was transferred to the Seoul Central District Prosecutors’ Office, though Taeil has not yet been summoned for additional questioning.
According to Article 4 of the Act on Special Cases Concerning the Punishment of Sexual Crimes in South Korea, if convicted, Taeil could face a minimum of seven years or life imprisonment.
