The fifth and final season of The Boys on Prime Video is giving fans a clear answer about one big question. Many viewers thought Ryan Butcher might grow up to take the place of his evil father Homelander. But the new episodes show something very different. The show proves that Ryan is not ready to replace the most powerful supe in the world.
Season 5 started streaming on April 8, 2026, with two episodes. New episodes drop every Wednesday. The series finale is scheduled for May 20, 2026. Viewers in the USA, UK, Canada, Australia, and India can watch all episodes on Prime Video.
Ryan Returns in Episode 3 With a Dangerous Plan
Ryan, played by Cameron Crovetti, stays hidden for the first two episodes of the season. After the events of season four where he killed Grace Mallory, the young supe goes into hiding. The show reveals he spent time in an abandoned Russian mansion. Homelander tells Sister Sage that rumors spread about him killing his own son. Vought puts out a cover story that Ryan attends a boarding school in Norway.
When Ryan finally shows up in episode three, he carries a lot of guilt. He worries about becoming just like his father. But Billy Butcher finds him and puts a dark plan in his head. Butcher tells Ryan that Homelander hurt his mother, Becca. This news fills Ryan with anger and a need for revenge.
“Yeah, I think he’s serious about it. I think that conversation he has with Ryan at the bar is chilling because it’s delivered with such warmth and sympathy, but he’s asking the kid to be a suicide bomber.” – Eric Kripke, show creator
Butcher wants Ryan to act as bait. He plans to use the supe-killing virus on Homelander while Ryan distracts his father. Ryan does not fully understand what he is agreeing to do.
The Fight Shows a Massive Power Gap
Ryan ignores Butcher’s warnings and goes to face Homelander directly. He believes he can defeat his father. The young supe unleashes his heat vision and attacks with everything he has.
The fight does not go well for Ryan. Homelander barely tries hard during the battle. He mostly plays defense and easily dodges Ryan’s attacks. With very little effort, Homelander pins Ryan down and punches him until he loses consciousness.
The scene shows just how big the power gap really is. Ryan is one of the strongest supes alive. But Homelander overpowers him while using maybe only half of his true strength. This tells viewers that no other supe in this universe can match Homelander in a direct fight.
Ryan Survives But Faces a Hard Truth
The episode ends with Butcher finding Ryan lying on the ground barely moving. Homelander left him there after the beating. Ryan still breathes, showing he survives the attack. But he comes very close to death.
This brutal beating teaches Ryan something important. Homelander never truly loved him. His father only wanted a supe heir to continue his legacy. That hard truth might push Ryan toward a different path. He now sees that he cannot beat his father alone. Working with Butcher’s team could become his only option.
Showrunner Eric Kripke explained that this version of Butcher feels no limits. Even when Butcher shows some regret at the end of the episode, it does not change his actions.
“I think, were he to do it again… If he has the virus and needs Ryan to do it again, he would do it without hesitation. He’d feel bad, but I don’t think that would stop any of his actions.” – Eric Kripke
What Makes Ryan Different From Homelander
The fight scene shows one major difference between father and son. Homelander cares only about himself and living forever. He wants power and nothing else. Ryan actually cares about things beyond himself. He shows he is willing to die to stop his father and save people. Homelander would never do that.
Ryan feels guilt for the damage he has caused. He worries about becoming a monster like his father. Those feelings do not exist in Homelander at all. This emotional difference could become the key to bringing down the most powerful supe in the world.
Episode three of The Boys Season 5 focuses on a cycle of violence. Kripke said the writers wanted to show this through three young characters. Ryan, Zoe Neuman, and Maverick all face choices about following their parents’ paths. Only Zoe chooses to walk away. Ryan stays trapped in the cycle with terrible results.
