Dr. Caroline Muirhead’s Tinder romance turned into a real-life crime investigation after her fiancé confessed to a 2017 hit-and-run death.
The new true crime documentary series Should I Marry a Murderer arrived on Netflix on April 29, 2026. The three-part series tells the shocking story of Dr. Caroline Muirhead, a forensic pathologist from Glasgow, Scotland. She found herself trapped in a terrible situation when the man she planned to marry admitted to a deadly secret.
Director Josh Allott, known for The Man with 1000 Kids, helms the project. The series uses first-hand interviews and private video footage to show how Muirhead helped solve a three-year-old mystery that left a family searching for answers.
Should I Marry a Murderer: A Whirlwind Romance That Hid a Dark Secret
Caroline Muirhead met Alexander ‘Sandy’ McKellar on the dating app Tinder in October 2020. After ending a long relationship, Muirhead was looking for a fresh start. She drove to the Scottish Highlands for their first date and quickly fell for McKellar, a gamekeeper who seemed gentle and charming.
The relationship moved very fast. Within weeks, they were engaged. Muirhead was excited about their future together. Her friends and family worried that things were moving too quickly, but she ignored their concerns.
After the engagement, Muirhead asked McKellar a direct question. She told him that if they were going to get married, he needed to share everything—both the good and the bad. That question changed her life forever.
McKellar broke down. He started having a panic attack, gasping and wailing. Then he confessed to a horrific crime.
“I was in shock, frozen almost. I didn’t know what to believe. This man I thought I could be with for the rest of my life had just told me he was a killer.” – Caroline Muirhead
The 2017 Death of Tony Parsons
McKellar told Muirhead that three years earlier, on September 29, 2017, he had been driving drunk with his twin brother Robert McKellar. On the A82 road near Bridge of Orchy in Scotland, he hit a cyclist. The impact was severe. The man flew over the car.
The victim was Tony Parsons, a 63-year-old grandfather and former Royal Navy submariner. Parsons had survived prostate cancer and wanted to give back. He planned a 104-mile charity bike ride from Fort William to his home in Tillicoultry.
Parsons rode through the night. His son Mike, a former police officer, grew worried when his father did not check in. A large search began, but no one could find him.

Instead of calling for help after the crash, the McKellar brothers made a terrible choice. They hid Parsons’ bicycle in a forest. They returned later with another vehicle, took his body, and buried it in a peat bog on the Auch Estate, a spot usually used for animal remains.
Evidence later showed that Parsons did not die right away. He may have lived for 20 to 30 minutes after the crash. If the brothers had called emergency services, he might have survived.
Should I Marry a Murderer: The Red Bull Can That Solved the Case
After McKellar’s confession, Muirhead faced an impossible choice. Stay loyal to her fiancé or do the right thing for Tony Parsons’ family. She decided to act.
Muirhead asked McKellar to take her to the burial site. She pretended she wanted to understand what happened. During the visit, she drank a can of Sugar Free Red Bull. She quietly dropped the empty can at the exact spot where Parsons’ body was buried.
That small red can became the key piece of evidence. Muirhead called the police and gave them the location. Officers found the can and recovered Parsons’ remains. The family finally had answers after three years of not knowing what happened.
Tony’s son Mike expressed his deep thanks for what Muirhead did.
“Without Caroline’s actions, my father’s body might never have been found.” – Mike Parsons, Tony’s son
Should I Marry a Murderer: A Long Road to Justice
Even after Muirhead told the police, she did not walk away. She continued her relationship with McKellar for months while secretly working with investigators. She recorded his confessions on her phone and gathered more proof.
The McKellar brothers were arrested in December 2020. But they were released because police said there was not enough evidence to charge them. Muirhead had to keep up the act and stay close to her fiancé while her mental health suffered greatly.
In July 2023, the case finally went to court. Alexander McKellar pleaded guilty to culpable homicide. Judge Lord Armstrong sentenced him to 12 years in prison. Robert McKellar received five years and three months for trying to hide the crime.
The judge told the court that the brothers caused the Parsons family “devastating loss and emotional ongoing harm.”
