Cleveland Cavaliers star James Harden was arrested early Saturday morning in Houston, Texas, and charged with a misdemeanor count of unlawfully carrying a weapon in a motor vehicle.
The 36-year-old guard was taken into custody at approximately 3:41 a.m. local time on June 13, 2026, and booked into Harris County Jail around 5 a.m. He was released after posting a $100 bond.
What Happened: The Charges Explained
According to court records and charging documents, Harden was traveling through downtown Houston in his Mercedes when law enforcement spotted an unholstered handgun in plain view inside the vehicle. The weapon was reportedly sitting in the cup holder or rear seat area, fully visible to officers.
When police stopped the vehicle, Harden confirmed the handgun belonged to him, leading to his immediate arrest.
The charge is a Class A misdemeanor in Texas, which carries a maximum sentence of up to one year in county jail if convicted. While Texas has some of the most lenient gun laws in the United States, it is illegal to carry a handgun that is loose and in plain view inside a motor vehicle.
Bond Conditions and Court Date
Following his release on bond, Harden faces strict conditions:
- No possession of firearms, ammunition, or other weapons
- No consumption of alcohol, controlled substances, or marijuana (unless prescribed by a doctor)
- Mandatory random urinalysis
His arraignment is scheduled for June 22, 2026, in Harris County Criminal Court.

The Cleveland Cavaliers released a statement following the arrest:
“The Cleveland Cavaliers are aware of the arrest of James Harden this morning and are in the process of gathering additional information. We are in contact with James and his representation and will continue to monitor developments as they become available. At this time, we will have no further comment.”
Harden’s representatives have not yet publicly responded to the charges.

Background on Harden
James Harden, an 11-time All-Star and the 2017-18 NBA MVP, joined the Cavaliers mid-season after being traded from the Los Angeles Clippers in February 2026. He remains a Houston resident, and court documents list his address at an apartment building near the Toyota Center, where he played for the Rockets from 2012 to 2020.
The 17-year NBA veteran is currently facing an uncertain offseason. He holds a $42.3 million player option for the 2026-27 season but has indicated he would like to remain with Cleveland on a longer-term deal following their Eastern Conference Finals loss to the New York Knicks.
