Apple TV+’s horror-comedy series Widow’s Bay wrapped its first season on June 17, 2026, and the finale left viewers with a chilling message delivered not through dialogue, but through sound. The final scene sees Mayor Tom Loftis (Matthew Rhys) standing by the shore after a devastating storm has passed. He casts a family brooch into the water, then hears the town’s church bell toll. It rings eight times.
It’s an ominous ending to a season full of secrets, but it’s not a random occurrence. The ringing of the bell is the island’s way of communicating a dark demand: it requires more human sacrifice. The series has been renewed for a second season, and the ending sets up a terrifying dilemma for Tom and the remaining residents.
The Church Bell is the Island’s Dinner Bell
To understand the final scene, viewers need to remember what was discovered in the storm shelter. As everyone huddled in the basement of City Hall to wait out the storm, town employee Dale (Jeff Hiller) stumbled upon a collection of old film reels.
One of the reels, labeled “For You,” featured a cheery but sinister man explaining the island’s ancient pact. He said, “The bad times will not end until the covenant is honored, and honored fully. Life for life, the island will make its needs known. One soul for each bell toll.”
The video essentially clarifies that the church bell is the demonic entity’s way of placing an order. Each ring of the bell signals that the island hungers for a human life. If the covenant is not honored, the bad timesโrepresented by a violent stormโwill continue to plague the town.
Why Did It Ring Nine Times and Then Eight Times?
The first time the church bell rang in the series, it tolled nine times. This was a demand from the island for nine souls. Earlier in the season, Reverend Bryce (Toby Huss) heard the bell and investigated, but he found it chained up, proving the ringing was supernatural. Distraught by what he discovered about the covenant, Bryce ultimately took his own life.
In the season finale, the island receives its first sacrifice. Bored teenagers, including Tom’s son Evan (Kingston Rumi Southwick), find a hidden chamber beneath the shelter. When the town custodian, Kenny (Michael Malvesti), finds them and chases them out, the door slams shut behind him. Kenny is consumed by the entity in the room, and the storm outside immediately subsides.
The next morning, when Tom hears the bell toll, it only rings eight times. This is because Kenny has already fulfilled one of the required sacrifices. The island is now demanding eight more lives to honor the pact.

What Are the Eight Bell Rings a Warning For?
The eight bell tolls are a foreboding warning for the future. They signal that the island’s curse is far from broken. In fact, the situation has become even more complicated.
To truly end the curse, the last living descendant of founder Richard Warren must be killed. Tom had initially planned to kill his elderly secretary, Ruth (K Callan), believing she was the final descendant. But Ruth revealed a shocking secret before she could be killed: Tom’s late wife, Lauren, was actually her secret daughter. This makes Evan, Tom’s son, the true last descendant.
Tom cannot kill his own son. The season ends with him keeping this secret, leaving the town in a precarious position. While the entity may have been appeased temporarily by Kenny’s death, the eight bell tolls indicate that the hunt for souls will resume. Tom now has an impossible choice: he must either find a way to feed the island eight more lives or reveal the truth and sacrifice his own child.
