The second episode of Half Man dropped on May 1, 2026, and it left viewers with their jaws on the floor. Richard Gadd‘s new HBO series just delivered one of the most shocking television moments of the year.

The show moves between two time periods—Niall (played by Jamie Bell as an adult and Mitchell Robertson as a teen) preparing for his wedding, and his university days in 1989 where everything fell apart. Episode 2 reveals that the person Niall is marrying is not a stranger. It is his old college flatmate Alby (played by Charlie De Melo as an adult and Bilal Hasna as a teen), the same person Ruben violently attacked years ago.

The Wedding Day That Starts With Panic

The episode opens hours before the ceremony. Niall‘s mother Lori gives him a small knife called a sgian-dubh as a wedding gift. She then drops a bomb—Ruben is coming to the wedding. Niall did not invite him. Ruben found out on his own and showed up.

When Niall steps outside, Ruben (played by Richard Gadd as an adult and Stuart Campbell as a teen) arrives on a motorcycle. Ruben looks at Niall and makes a finger gun gesture. The look between them is tense and loaded with years of painful history.

Director Alexandria Brodski explained that this silent connection was carefully built.

“There’s so much going on which is not dialogue and which is a physical experience of these two characters… where they’re nearly bodily connected,” Brodski told TV Insider. “These kinds of gazes at each other work because we loaded them in the previous episodes and Episode 2, so they have carried so much meaning.”

Niall Tries to Start Fresh at University

The story jumps back to 1989. Lori drops young Niall off at Glasgow West University. She gives him clear instructions—do not call Ruben. She wants him to build his own life away from Ruben‘s powerful influence.

Niall moves into a shared flat with three people—Joanna, Celeste, and Alby. The girls are outgoing and quickly pull Niall into their social circle. Alby is quieter but more observant. He notices something about Niall that the others do not see.

Alby comments that Niall seems like a performer. He is not being himself. He is acting. Niall understands the hidden meaning—Alby thinks he is gay. This realization shakes Niall to his core.

A Night Out Ends in Shame and a Desperate Call

The flatmates go clubbing. Niall tries to act like Ruben—drinking heavily and acting tough. But when he is alone with Alby, he cannot keep up the act. He gets so drunk that he loses control of his bladder. Alby finds him and takes care of him, cleaning him up and putting him to bed.

Instead of feeling grateful, Niall feels deep shame. He picks up the phone and calls Ruben. He says three words—“I need you.” Mitchell Robertson, who plays young Niall, explained why his character made this destructive choice.

“It‘s funny, like you sometimes will choose potentially what’s bad for us just because it’s familiar,” Robertson told Decider. “When he’s in that moment of panic, the only solution that he can really think of is Ruben.”

Ruben Arrives and Takes Over Everything

The next morning, Ruben shows up at the flat. He immediately charms everyone. He flirts with Joanna. He sets his sights on Celeste. He even pushes Niall and Alby to kiss during a game of spin the bottle. Niall agrees to show he is “man enough”.

But that kiss wakes something up in Niall. He realizes he liked it. He starts spending more time with Alby. They bond over movies. Alby makes a move, and Niall admits he is attracted to men. But he is not ready to take things further. Alby agrees to go slow.

Things Get Dark Fast

The peace does not last. Ruben and Celeste take acid and trash the flat‘s kitchen. They break the mug Lori gave Niall. Joanna threatens to call the police, and Ruben runs away.

Niall and Alby clean up the mess together. In a vulnerable moment, Niall finally lets his guard down. He kisses Alby, and they take things to Alby‘s room. They are about to be intimate when Ruben returns to the flat.

Niall panics and pulls away. Alby has had enough. He is tired of being with men who cannot accept themselves. He gives Niall an ultimatum—tell Ruben the truth or stay stuck forever.

Niall Tries to Come Out and Fails

Niall takes Alby‘s advice. He goes to breakfast with Ruben, planning to tell him he is gay. But when the moment comes, he cannot do it. The fear of losing Ruben‘s approval is too strong. He lies to Alby later, saying he told Ruben everything and Ruben was fine with it.

Alby sees through the lie. Frustrated, he decides to tell Ruben himself. He starts speaking, and Niall desperately tries to stop him. In the struggle, Alby pushes Niall into a cabinet. Niall hits his head and falls unconscious.

This is when everything goes wrong.

Ruben‘s Brutal Attack Changes Three Lives Forever

Ruben sees Alby push Niall. He does not understand what is really happening. He thinks Alby hurt his brother. Without hesitation, Ruben attacks Alby. The beating is savage. He kicks Alby in the face repeatedly. The damage is permanent.

Richard Gadd, who created the show and plays adult Ruben, defended showing this level of violence.

“I think in an exploration of male violence, you have to show the lengths to which you can get to and the damage that it causes to others. And I think if you pull your punches on that, quite literally, you won’t get anywhere at all with the meaning behind it,” Gadd told Decider.

Police arrive. Ruben is arrested. As they take him away, he looks at Niall and makes the same finger gun gesture he made at the wedding. Alby is carried out on a stretcher, his face covered in blood.

The Digital Spy review noted how this moment sticks with viewers long after the episode ends.

“It‘s almost impossible to describe the visceral reaction you feel watching the assault on Alby. There’s a guttural hate and anger to the force Ruben inflicts.”

The Wedding Reveal That Changes Everything

The episode cuts back to the present day. Niall walks down the aisle. At the altar stands adult Alby—played by Charlie De Melo—with visible scars on his face from Ruben‘s attack years ago.

Alexandria Brodski, the director, shared her first reaction to reading this twist in the script.

“When I read the script, I gasped,” Brodski told Entertainment Weekly. “I just did everything I could to communicate that feeling because I think it is so shocking.”

Alby says “I do” when asked. But when it is Niall‘s turn, he freezes. He looks at Ruben in the crowd. Their eyes lock. Ruben gives a small nod. Only then does Niall turn back and say “I do”.

The episode ends with Niall and Alby married—but Ruben still controls the moment from the pews.

Stuart Campbell, who plays young Ruben, explained what Ruben gets from this toxic bond.

“I get something from the relationship as well… I want to kind of be around him and go towards him. It’s not just Niall wanting protection from him.”

Half Man airs Thursdays at 9/8c on HBO and HBO Max. The series is also available on BBC iPlayer in the UK.
