Netflix’s Little House on the Prairie reboot hasn’t even aired its first season, but the show is already preparing for its second chapter. The streaming service ordered Season 2 back in March 2026, months before the July 9 series premiere. Now, the first major casting addition for the new season has been announced, bringing one of television’s most famous troublemakers back to Walnut Grove.
The Ingalls Family Will Return for Season 2
The core family at the center of the story will be back for more episodes. Alice Halsey continues as Laura Ingalls, the strong-willed girl whose adventures drive the series. Luke Bracey returns as her father, Charles Ingalls, with Crosby Fitzgerald back as her mother, Caroline Ingalls. Skywalker Hughes will also reprise her role as Laura’s older sister, Mary Ingalls.
The show, based on Laura Ingalls Wilder’s classic books, tells the story of a family surviving and growing together on the American frontier in the late 1800s. Netflix has described this version as a fresh adaptation rather than a direct remake of the 1974-1983 TV show.
Other returning cast members for Season 2 include Jocko Sims as Dr. George Tann, the town physician, and Warren Christie as John Edwards, a friend of the Ingalls family. Meegwun Fairbrother returns as Mitchell, while Alyssa Wapanatâhk and Wren Zhawenim Gotts will reprise their roles as White Sun and Good Eagle.
A New Face Joins the Cast as Nellie Oleson
On May 26, 2026, Netflix announced that Willa Dunn will play Nellie Oleson in Season 2. The character is Laura’s rich, spoiled classmate who loves to make her miserable. Dunn is a young actress who has appeared in Only Murders in the Building, Poker Face, and Inside Amy Schumer.
Netflix described Nellie as “a world-class spoiled princess and playground bully. Smart and supremely confident, sharp-tongued but easily wounded. Lives and breathes to make Laura Ingalls miserable.” However, the new version will show more layers to the character. Beneath her mean-girl attitude, there is “tenderness and a yearning for true friendship — even if she doesn’t know exactly how to get it.”
The Original Nellie Oleson Gives Her Blessing
Alison Arngrim, who played Nellie on the original 1974 series, shared her excitement about Dunn taking over the role. In a dramatic Instagram post, Arngrim passed the torch to the new actress.
“Today, another has been chosen. All hail she, whom they call ‘Willa’!! Like the one before her, she has risen from deep in the city of Gotham, to stand and take the ringlet crown. Bow down and tremble before her new majesty the new Nellie, Miss Willa Dunn!!”
Arngrim added that she has heard Dunn is “a perfectly nice little girl and will do a great job.”

The first season of Little House on the Prairie will premiere on July 9, 2026, on Netflix. All eight episodes will be available to stream on the same day. The show was filmed in Winnipeg, Canada, from June 2025 to October 2025.
Production for Season 2 has not started yet, but the early renewal shows Netflix has strong confidence in the project. Showrunner Rebecca Sonnenshine, known for her work on The Boys and The Vampire Diaries, is leading the series.
The producers and art department visited the real Walnut Grove, Minnesota, to make the show more accurate. They met with staff at the Laura Ingalls Wilder Museum and looked at old maps and newspaper clippings from the time period.
Dunn’s character, Nellie Oleson, will not appear in Season 1. She joins the story in Season 2, which will introduce more conflict for Laura when the Ingalls and Oleson families meet.
