Gerard Butler has seen his fair share of box office success with films like 300 and the Has Fallen series. But sometimes, a movie that fails in theaters finds new life at home. That is exactly what is happening with his latest sci-fi action sequel.
Greenland 2: Migration hit theaters in January 2026. The movie made only $44.8 million worldwide against a $90 million budget. Critics gave it a 49% score on Rotten Tomatoes. By normal standards, this looks like a disaster. Yet right now, this same movie is sitting at the top of streaming charts across the globe on three different platforms.
The Sequel Nobody Saw in Theaters Is Now Everywhere Online
Greenland 2: Migration continues the story of John Garrity, played by Butler, and his family. The first Greenland (2020) followed a family trying to survive a comet hitting Earth. The sequel picks up five years later. The Garrity family leaves their safe bunker in Greenland to cross a frozen wasteland. They search for a new place to call home.
Morena Baccarin returns as Allison Garrity. Roman Griffin Davis takes over the role of their son Nathan. The movie was directed by Ric Roman Waugh, who also made the first film.
The movie came out in US theaters on January 9, 2026. It opened to about $8.4 million in North America. The numbers never got better. By the end of its run, the film had lost a lot of money for Lionsgate.
Streaming Giants Fight for Butler’s Action Thriller
Here is where the story changes. Greenland 2: Migration is now available on Prime Video, Apple TV+, and HBO Max (also called Max). Having one movie on three major services at the same time is not common.
The film first became available to rent on digital platforms in late January 2025. Then it landed on subscription services. According to FlixPatrol, the movie has stayed on streaming charts for over 120 days. It reached the top of domestic charts on HBO Max right after arriving on May 8, 2026.
In India, the movie started streaming on Lionsgate Play from April 24, 2026. Viewers can also rent it on Prime Video in the same region. The global reach of this film is now bigger than its theatrical release ever was.
Why Audiences Are Watching Even After Bad Reviews
The critics did not like Greenland 2: Migration. The 49% Tomatometer score sounds bad. But regular viewers feel differently. The Popcornmeter (audience score) sits at 66%. That is a gap of 17 points. People watching at home enjoy the movie more than the critics did.
What draws viewers in? The family survival story works for many people. Butler plays a father trying to protect his wife and son. The frozen landscape looks cold and dangerous. The action scenes keep moving. For a night at home, these elements work well enough.
The core chemistry between Butler, Morena Baccarin, and Roman Griffin Davis is the heart of the feature.
One viewer on social media wrote, “Watched Greenland 2 last night. It is not a masterpiece, but it kept me on my couch for two hours. That is all I need sometimes.” Another fan said, “I missed this in theaters. Glad I can watch it now on Max. The frozen scenes look great on my TV.”
Butler’s Year Started Slow But Has Hope
Greenland 2: Migration is not the only Gerard Butler movie finding viewers at home. His 2023 film Kandahar also bombed in theaters with less than $10 million globally. That movie now streams on Tubi in the US and Netflix in other countries. It hit number one on streaming charts in Thailand and other markets. Critics gave it 42%, but audiences gave it 82%.
Butler has better projects coming. He will return as Stoick in the live-action How to Train Your Dragon sequel on June 11, 2027. He is also working on The Nest, an action thriller about a sniper saving fans at a World Cup match. Production starts in early 2027. A third Den of Thieves movie is also in development.
