Thrillers are a special kind of movie. Unlike big superhero films where fans get excited about explosions and special effects, thrillers must earn that excitement through a good setup, a strong cast, or one tense scene in a trailer. A single image can tell you the movie might get under your skin instead of just filling space on a calendar.
2026 is shaping up to be a very strong year for this genre. There are glossy psychological dramas, post-apocalyptic stories, star-driven action films, and high-concept heist movies. This list ranks the upcoming thrillers that feel most likely to make fans lean forward in their seats.
7. ‘The Wizard of the Kremlin’ (Released May 15, 2026)
This political thriller sits at the bottom of the list only because the early response has been more mixed than electric. Olivier Assayas directs Paul Dano and Jude Law in a story about power formation around Vladimir Putin. Jude Law plays the Russian leader, and Paul Dano plays Vadim Baranov, a fictional spin doctor based on real people.
Vertical acquired North American rights for a 2026 release. The film already premiered abroad, and the conversation around it tilts toward “interesting” rather than “you must see this.” A thriller lives or dies on urgency, and this one feels more like a curious watch than a knockout punch. Still, political thrillers with corruption at the center always attract viewers.
6. ‘Runner’ (Coming September 11, 2026)
Runner has a simple but effective setup. Alan Ritchson plays Hank Malone, a high-end courier faced with a life-or-death mission. He must deliver an organ to a 7-year-old girl who needs an immediate transplant. The task goes wrong when a crime syndicate leader wants the organ for herself. Owen Wilson also stars, giving the film a weirder flavor than standard action-thrillers.
Angel Studios added this film to its 2026 slate for September 11. Scott Waugh directs. Rodrigo Santoro, Leila George, and Adriana Barraza have also joined the cast. This movie feels like a bet on ingredients rather than a clear identity. Ritchson in danger is easy to buy, and a timed mission is easy to buy. But it needs that one special detail to turn “this sounds solid” into “I need this now.”
5. ‘Mutiny’ (Coming August 21, 2026)
Jason Statham plus director Jean-Francois Richet (known for Plane) is already a strong combination. The premise helps too. Statham’s character, Cole Reed, watches his billionaire boss get murdered. He is then framed for the crime and must uncover an international conspiracy to clear his name. That is old-school thriller fuel.
Lionsgate has dated the film for August 21, 2026. The project has been steadily locking in cast and release plans. This movie sounds more conspiracy-driven than some recent Statham vehicles. He works best when the action has some institutional grime under it, not just “one man kills many men,” but one man being squeezed by a bigger machine who decides to break it instead.
4. ‘Cliffhanger’ Reboot (Coming August 28, 2026)
This reboot could still go wrong, but that risk is part of the excitement. Lily James and Pierce Brosnan star, with Jaume Collet-Serra directing. Sylvester Stallone originally planned to star but later left the project. The setup is pure high-altitude nightmare. A luxury trip to the Dolomites mountains turns into a kidnapping ambush. One daughter escapes and must save her father and sister from both the mountain and the criminals.
The film is currently lined up for an August 28, 2026 US release. The anticipation here is almost entirely about the tone. If Collet-Serra really leans into mountain dread, physical geography, and the terror of vertical vulnerability, this could be very good. With James and Brosnan, there is a chance the movie understands both glamour and danger.
3. ‘How to Rob a Bank’ (Coming September 4, 2026)
David Leitch (director of Bullet Train and The Fall Guy) is directing this heist thriller. Nicholas Hoult leads a crew of bank robbers who broadcast their daring heists on social media. Their growing viral fame puts them in the crosshairs of a veteran FBI agent, played by John C. Reilly, and a brilliant software engineer.
The cast also includes Zoë Kravitz, Anna Sawai, Christian Slater, and Pete Davidson. Amazon MGM has dated the film for September 4, 2026. Leitch has the exact skill set to make this premise work, not just action fluency but rhythm, ensemble work, and vibe control. Hoult is having a career moment where he keeps feeling one role away from becoming the guy who can anchor slick, dangerous, half-winking thrillers without losing his edge.
2. ‘The Dog Stars’ (Coming August 28, 2026)
Some people will call this more of a sci-fi drama than a thriller. But the anticipation around it is absolutely thriller anticipation. Ridley Scott directs a post-apocalyptic story about a pilot, his dog, a devastated world, and the possibility of a better life. The film stars Jacob Elordi, Josh Brolin, Margaret Qualley, Allison Janney, Guy Pearce, and Benedict Wong.
20th Century has dated the film for August 28, 2026, after moving it from an earlier March slot. CinemaCon footage is already out teasing its mood. The reason this film ranks so high is emotional threat. Many thrillers promise adrenaline. The Dog Stars promises dread, solitude, and the possibility that one human connection in a broken world might feel more dangerous than gunfire. Ridley Scott working in post-apocalyptic mode can still be very powerful.
1. ‘Verity’ (Coming October 2, 2026)
Verity takes the top spot. It is not guaranteed to be the best movie here, but in pure anticipation terms, it already has the most dangerous combination. This is an adaptation of Colleen Hoover’s novel. The film stars Dakota Johnson, Anne Hathaway, and Josh Hartnett, with Michael Showalter directing.
Amazon MGM has dated the film for October 2, 2026. The first weekend of October has been very successful for other adaptations, including 2014’s Gone Girl and 2016’s The Girl on the Train. The story follows a struggling writer who enters the home of an injured bestselling author to finish her work. She finds a manuscript that may or may not reveal monstrous truth and gets pulled into a family dynamic that is already troubled before the real suspense even starts.

Hathaway playing Verity is a major draw. Hartnett back in this dark romantic lane is also a big plus. This is the film on the list that most fully feels like a proper opening weekend thriller. It has the strongest current under it already.
