Love Island UK returned for its 13th season on June 1, 2026, on ITV2, and the premiere episode wasted no time shaking things up. Host Maya Jama welcomed 12 new singles to the villa in Mallorca, but nothing about this opening night followed the usual script. The show introduced a string of major format changes, including a first-ever nighttime arrival and a shocking power move for two surprise bombshells. From instant red flags to revealing party dares, the episode packed more drama in 60 minutes than some full seasons.
12 Islanders Arrive After Dark for a New Kind of Villa Party
For the first time in Love Island history, the season began after sunset. The 12 contestants—Aidan Murphy (23) , Angelista (24) , Ellie Chadwick (24) , Jasmine Müller (27) , Lola Deal (28) , Lorenzo Alessi (28) , Mica Harris (21) , Ope Sowande (27) , Robyn Langton (21) , Samraj Toor (25) , Sean Fitzgerald (25) , and Sam Workman (25) —entered the villa at night for a welcome party under the stars, dressed in glamorous outfits instead of the usual daytime swimwear.
The change split viewers immediately. Some fans posted on X: “Not sure I like this night start but at least we’ll cut straight to the drama.” Others wrote, “I actually prefer them meeting at night, this is way better.” Former Islander Kaz Kamwi, who appeared in series seven and All Stars, said she felt jealous watching the new cast. “Night time entrances? This is tea. You get to come in a sexy outfit, not worry about your makeup melting in the sun. Those lucky, lucky girls have no idea what that feels like.”
The villa also showed off a redesigned space with a blue firepit, which drew its own wave of complaints. One fan called it “a monstrosity to the eyes,” while another wrote, “I hate that blue firepit so much.”
A New Coupling Rule Gives Islanders Full Control
Instead of letting the public decide the first pairings, Maya Jama announced that the Islanders would choose their own partners through open discussion and negotiation. This marked a major break from tradition, where contestants usually step forward for someone they like or wait for a public vote. Executive producer Lewis Evans explained the thinking behind the change. “We’re doing something that we’ve never done before in the history of Love Island. We’re going to take a big risk, and we hope it pays off.”
The first six couples formed during the premiere were:
- Mica and Samraj
- Jasmine and Lorenzo
- Ellie and Aidan
- Angelista and Ope
- Lola and Sean
- Robyn and Sam
Kaz Kamwi, who had to step forward for boys during her season, called the old method a “humiliation ritual.” She said of the new rule: “I liked the twist. It’s Love Island Hunger Games edition. I wish I had that.”
Phone Roulette Dares Bring Out Real Feelings and Red Flags
After the couples settled in, the Islanders played a game called phone roulette. They placed their phones in a box, and a random phone received a text with a dare. The tasks forced contestants to share honest opinions about each other. Mica publicly admitted she thought Ope faked tripping on purpose for camera attention. Robyn and George shared a kiss, and George later compared Robyn’s kissing style to Mica’s, saying Robyn used “more tongue.”
But the biggest red flags came from Aidan and Lorenzo. Aidan built his “perfect girl” by combining Ellie’s face, Yasmin’s body, and Robyn’s personality. He then admitted he enjoys playing mind games and wants to see Ellie get jealous. The comment made him look driven by lust rather than genuine interest. One fan on X responded: “Aidan is a walking ick already.”
Lorenzo made even more waves. He called his partner Jasmine “promiscuous” by accident, then tried to correct himself by saying he meant “mysterious.” Later, he called her a “sassy b***h.” Jasmine shut him down firmly, telling him to call her a “baddie” instead. When Lorenzo hesitated, Jasmine pointed out that a negative word came more naturally to him.
Viewers on social media quickly labeled Lorenzo a “walking red flag.” One person wrote, “Lorenzo’s negging is NOT banter, it’s straight red flag behaviour Jasmine is too gorgeous for this, run babe!!” Another added, “lorenzo is the biggest red flag bro, he’s so backhanded ew.” A third joked: “I’m ready to report Lorenzo to Ofcom.”
Despite Lorenzo’s behavior, Jasmine won over fans instantly. “Omg I love Jasmine, my winner already,” one viewer posted. Another declared: “Ladies and gentlemen my winner has arrived. Jasmineeeeeee.”
Two Bombshells Arrive With the Power to Dump Two Islanders
Just as the Islanders thought they had settled in, Maya Jama introduced two bombshells at the end of the episode: George Knight, a 28-year-old professional footballer from Winchester, and Yasmin Hadlow, a 23-year-old recruitment consultant from Broadstairs, Kent. They arrived not just to couple up but to carry out a secret mission.
Maya told them: “In 24 hours, one girl and one boy will be dumped, and that decision will be down to both of you. You can dump anyone for any reason. Will you get rid of your biggest competition? Will you dump a game player who’s not here for love, or will it be someone who you’re just not vibing with?”
The twist meant that two original Islanders would be sent home after barely one full day in the villa. Fans reacted furiously on social media. One wrote: “I don’t think UK Love Island is ready. Still feel like getting new bombshells in to kick out islanders that just got into the villa is an unfair thing to do and a total waste of their time.” Another posted: “UK Love Island already p***ing me off.” A third added: “Love Island UK low key in its flop era.”
Some viewers directed their anger at the producers. One fan wrote: “Why can’t you lot just let the current couples get a lil comfy. Then, say after 2-3 eps, you can bring in a bombshell to actually shake things up. Bringing in a bombshell this early is boring.” Another said: “This is like the worst twist I have ever seen on LI… especially because the og cast is so strong.”
However, not everyone hated the change. A smaller group of viewers welcomed the chaos. “what a surprise from maya, this is gonna be wild in the best way,” one person wrote. Another said: “We are so back, I’m too excited.”
