The war drama Pressure arrived in theaters on May 29, 2026, and has already pulled in $5.8 million across 1,829 locations in North America during its opening weekend. The film stars Brendan Fraser as General Dwight D. Eisenhower and Andrew Scott as Captain James Stagg, a meteorologist whose weather prediction changed the course of history. While two big horror movies took the top spots at the box office, this smaller WWII thriller still managed to deliver Fraser’s best live-action opening in over a decade.
A True Story Set During the 72 Hours Before D-Day
Pressure tells the real story of the tense days leading up to June 6, 1944. General Eisenhower faced the hardest decision of his life: launch the largest seaborne invasion in history or wait. The weather was terrible. Storms threatened to destroy the entire operation.
Captain James Stagg, a Scottish meteorologist, gave Eisenhower a narrow weather window that could make the mission possible. The film covers only 72 hours inside the briefing room. No battle scenes. Just men arguing about wind, clouds, and the lives of thousands of soldiers.
Director Anthony Maras, who made Hotel Mumbai in 2018, keeps the tension high using only conversations and weather maps. The movie is based on a play by David Haig, who also co-wrote the screenplay. Haig played Stagg on stage before this film version.
Critics and Audiences Agree on the Quality
Pressure currently holds an 87% critics score and a 95% audience score on Rotten Tomatoes. The CinemaScore grade is an A, which means people who saw it really liked it.
Frank Scheck of The Hollywood Reporter called Andrew Scott’s performance “award-worthy” and said the movie steadily builds suspense.
Pete Hammond of Deadline called it a “crackerjack film” that stays relevant because of its themes about leadership and hard choices.
Most reviewers agreed that the movie makes weather forecasting feel as dangerous as any battlefield. Some critics said the premise might not fill a full movie, but even mixed reviews praised the acting.
Box Office Numbers Compared to Fraser’s Earlier Work
The $5.8 million opening is important for Brendan Fraser because it breaks a long streak. This is his best debut for a live-action movie since 2010’s Furry Vengeance, which opened with $6.6 million. If you count animated films, The Nut Job from 2014 did $19.4 million, but Pressure is Fraser’s biggest live-action opening in 16 years.
His Oscar-winning movie The Whale (2022) opened in only six theaters. When it expanded wide, its biggest three-day weekend was just $1.51 million. So Pressure already beat that number by a lot.
The film still needs to make more than $11.7 million to pass The Whale’s domestic total of $17.5 million. Strong word of mouth and the A CinemaScore could help it get there in the coming weeks.
The Cast Brings Real History to Life
Andrew Scott plays the lead role of James Stagg. Scott is known for playing the hot priest in Fleabag and Moriarty in Sherlock. Here he plays a quiet scientist fighting against military leaders who do not want to hear bad news.
Kerry Condon stars as Kay Summersby, Eisenhower’s chauffeur and personal secretary. Damian Lewis plays Field Marshall Bernard Montgomery. Chris Messina plays Irving P. Krick, a rival meteorologist who gave Eisenhower different weather advice.
The film had its New York premiere on May 26, 2026 at AMC Lincoln Square. Eisenhower’s great granddaughter Adriana Echavarria attended the event.

Why This Small Movie Matters at the Box Office
Pressure opened in seventh place, competing against two huge horror hits. Backrooms from A24 made over $85 million in its first weekend. Obsession from Focus Features also performed very well. But for a historical drama with no action sequences, Pressure did exactly what it needed to do.
The movie cost less than big blockbusters, so $5.8 million is a solid start. The studio Focus Features distributed the film in North America, while StudioCanal handles the UK release. International numbers are still coming in.
