Witch Hat Atelier Episode 12, titled “The Shadow of Romonon,” aired on June 15, 2026, and delivered one of the most emotional and thrilling installments of the season so far. The penultimate episode focused on Euini’s personal struggles and featured a stunning cliffhanger that completely changes the stakes for the finale.
The episode opened with Qifrey telling Coco and Tetia the dark history of the Serpentback Cave. It was once home to Romonon, a prosperous nation of witches who became obsessed with exclusivity. They created the cave to keep out anyone they deemed unworthy, but their arrogance turned them against each other. In the end, they started turning their own people into golden statues until the city collapsed under its own hubris. This story serves as a warning about the dangers of gatekeeping and judgment.
Euini’s Struggle With Self-Worth
The episode then shifted focus to the second apprenticeship trial inside the Serpentback Cave. Agott, Richeh, and Euini had to guide their myrphon companions through the treacherous path. The challenge required them to draw casting seals while being observed.
Euini, however, has a severe fear of being watched. Years of verbal abuse from his mentor, Kukrow, left him believing he was useless. His hands shake uncontrollably whenever someone watches him draw, and he nearly gave up before the test even started. He tells the others that he can only draw when he is alone.
Richeh’s Encouragement Changes Everything
Just as Euini was about to quit, Richeh stepped in. She has her own painful past with a mentor who dismissed her creativity, but she refused to let it break her. Instead of treating Euini like he was stupid, she challenged him to stop relying on what others expect.
“She has an honest conversation with him and challenges Euini to stop relying on what others expect from him.”
Richeh’s words finally reach him. Euini realizes that the only person standing in his way is himself. He studies the enchantment on his cloak and creatively rewrites the spell. By pulling the cloak over his head, he becomes a walking shadow, effectively hiding himself from view. Hidden in darkness, he can finally focus and draw the spell he needs to complete the test.
His breakthrough is an emotional moment, showing that creativity and self-acceptance can overcome even the deepest insecurities.

Just as the trio completes the challenge, everything falls apart. A Brimmed Cap witch appears behind their proctor, Alaira. Despite her quick reflexes, Alaira is captured and vanishes inside the witch’s cloak. The students are left stunned and helpless as their teacher disappears.
The Brimmed Caps had been lurking in the shadows throughout the episode, and this sudden attack yanks the story back to the main plot. Alaira’s warning to the children—not to believe anything the Brimmed Caps say—suggests the finale will involve manipulation and difficult choices.
The kidnapping happens quickly, but its impact is enormous. Agott, Richeh, and Euini are now alone in the Serpentback Cave with a dangerous enemy. The finale on June 22, 2026, will reveal how they handle this threat.
