The first official teaser trailer for Dune Part Three has arrived, giving audiences a look at the final chapter of Denis Villeneuve’s science fiction trilogy. The two-minute trailer shows Timothée Chalamet returning as Paul Atreides, now an emperor whose rule is falling apart around him. The footage also confirms the shocking return of Jason Momoa as Duncan Idaho, despite the character dying in the first film.

The trailer opens with a quiet moment between Paul and Chani, played by Zendaya, as they discuss names for their unborn child. Paul suggests Ghanima for a girl and Chani proposes Leto for a boy, honoring Paul’s father. This personal scene quickly gives way to massive battle sequences showing Paul’s holy war spreading across the galaxy.

Dune Part Three releases in theaters on December 18, 2026. The film faces direct competition from Avengers: Doomsday on the same date, with fans already calling the box office clash “Dunesday”.

Paul Atreides Faces the Cost of His Holy War

The trailer makes it clear that Paul’s victory in Dune Part Two came with a terrible price. His religious war, carried out in his name, has spread death across countless planets. Paul says in a voiceover: “War feeds on itself. The more I fight, the more our enemies fight back”.

Denis Villeneuve has said he wanted to show Paul dealing with the consequences of too much power. The director explained at the trailer launch that the world has changed in the years between films. “The climate is different. Arrakis is still the desert planet, but there are differences,” Villeneuve said. “We are visiting new sets, new places. I brought the camera to areas of the planet that you guys have not seen before, and we are visiting new planets as well”.

Rebecca Ferguson returns as Lady Jessica, Paul’s mother. In one powerful moment, she reminds Paul: “Your father never started a war”. This line points to the main theme of the film – that even a leader with good intentions can cause unimaginable destruction.

The story takes place 17 years after the events of Dune Part Two. Paul has ruled as Emperor for over a decade, but multiple factions now want him removed from power.

Jason Momoa Returns as Duncan Idaho in a New Form

One of the biggest surprises in the trailer is the appearance of Jason Momoa as Duncan Idaho. Fans remember Idaho dying heroically in the first film while protecting Paul and Lady Jessica from the Sardaukar.

The explanation comes from Frank Herbert’s original books. In the Dune universe, an organization called the Bene Tleilax creates “gholas” – artificial humans grown from the cells of dead people. Idaho returns as a ghola named Hayt, a weaponized version of the original character.

Hayt does not have Idaho’s memories at first. The character exists for a different purpose: assassination. However, in the books, the ghola eventually regains memories of his past life.

Villeneuve spoke about Momoa’s return at the trailer launch, confirming it connects directly to the source material. Jason Momoa himself has addressed the return, telling fans: “If you didn’t read the books, it’s not my fault”.

Robert Pattinson Joins as Villain Scytale

Robert Pattinson makes his debut in the franchise as Scytale, a shapeshifting antagonist. The trailer shows Pattinson with a platinum blonde buzz cut, looking very different from his previous roles.

Scytale is a Face Dancer, a type of being that can change their appearance. He joins a conspiracy against Paul involving the Spacing Guild, the Bene Gesserit, and the Bene Tleilax. Florence Pugh returns as Princess Irulan, who is also part of the plot to remove Paul from power.

Anya Taylor-Joy Takes on a Larger Role

Anya Taylor-Joy appeared briefly in Dune Part Two as Alia Atreides, Paul’s younger sister. In this film, she takes on a much larger role.

Timothée Chalamet praised Taylor-Joy’s performance at a recent IMAX fan event in Los Angeles. He described her work as “terrifying and amazing”. Chalamet said with a laugh: “I knew how good he was” when speaking about her performance.

Alia was born with the memories of her ancestors due to the spice exposure her mother experienced while pregnant. This makes her an unusual and powerful character in the Dune universe.

Full Cast and Release Information

The returning cast includes Zendaya as Chani, Florence Pugh as Princess Irulan, Javier Bardem as Stilgar, Josh Brolin as Gurney Halleck, and Rebecca Ferguson as Lady Jessica. New additions include Robert Pattinson as Scytale and Isaach De Bankolé as Farok.

The film is based on Frank Herbert’s novel Dune Messiah. Production has wrapped, with filming taking place across multiple international locations.

Dune Part Three arrives in theaters and IMAX on December 18, 2026. The movie is distributed worldwide by Warner Bros. Pictures.

The first two films in the franchise earned a combined $1.12 billion at the global box office and won eight Oscars from 15 nominations.

Fan reactions to the trailer have been strong. One viewer commented: “Dennis Villeneuve built the GOAT trilogy”. Another praised the music, writing: “Can we talk about how good the score is? The chant on the background gave me goosebumps from the start till the end. Hans Zimmer is just a genius”. A third fan said: “That chanting from Timothée is the most terrifyingly beautiful thing I’ve ever heard”.
