The Season 2 finale of The Librarians: The Next Chapter delivered a major twist that changed everything for Merlin. The episode titled “And the Camelot Conundrum” aired on September 7, 2026, on TNT. It wrapped up the wizard’s story arc with a valuable lesson about power and ambition.
The fantasy adventure series follows a team of Librarians – Vikram (Callum McGowan), Lysa (Olivia Morris), and Connor (Bluey Robinson) – along with Guardian Charlie (Jessica Green) and Elaine (Caroline Loncq). Throughout Season 2, Merlin (Dominic Monaghan) became obsessed with getting his magic back and rewriting history by going back to Camelot.
Merlin Creates His Own Camelot
The finale showed Merlin traveling back in time to Camelot. Instead of helping King Arthur pull the sword from the stone, Merlin did it himself. He took the throne and became the new King of Camelot.
Merlin believed he could rule better than Arthur because he knew both the past and the present. But as he grew more power-hungry, he started making harsh decisions. The Librarians tried to stop him, but Merlin killed each of them one by one.
The wizard got exactly what he wanted – his own version of Camelot. But the perfect kingdom he imagined turned out to be nothing like he expected. Even with all his knowledge and magic, Merlin could not create a perfect world.
The Big Twist Everyone Missed
Just when Merlin started regretting his choices, the show revealed a shocking truth. The Librarians and Merlin never actually traveled to Camelot.
The team used a magical artifact called the Reverie’s Torque to put Merlin into a dreamlike state inside the Library Annex. Everything he experienced – taking the throne, ruling Camelot, killing the Librarians – was all in his mind.
The team staged this whole dream to teach Merlin a lesson. They wanted him to see that unchecked ambition and hunger for power always have consequences. Watching the Librarians “die” made Merlin realize his actions could have deadly results in both the past and present.
What the Creator Said About the Ending
Series creator Dean Devlin explained the thinking behind this twist in an interview with TV Insider. He compared Merlin’s journey to an addict who needs to hit rock bottom before they can change.
“The idea is to take us through a redemption story and with any addict, they got to hit rock bottom. So, the question was, could they get Merlin to hit rock bottom?”
Devlin also spoke about why the team chose to help Merlin instead of leaving him trapped in the dream state. He said the team members had complex feelings about their decision, but they all felt they were doing the right thing.
Dominic Monaghan on Merlin’s Humbling Experience
Dominic Monaghan, who plays Merlin, said his character was “humbled” by the end of the finale. He described Merlin as someone blinded by his obsession with magic, which led to a very dark turn.
Monaghan pointed out that the team could have easily locked Merlin up or left him in the dream state. But they chose to save him instead.
“I think that’s the real humbling moment for Merlin because you don’t see a massive amount of humanity in him. You see someone desperate for power, desperate to be the leader, to be the person who’s making the decisions. But then, when he realizes at the end that the Librarians have kind of tricked him, but they’ve also saved him as well, I think it’s a very humbling experience for him.”
Monaghan added that this moment forces Merlin to face the fact that good people exist who want to do good things – something he could have chosen but did not.
Merlin’s New Role in the Library
After learning his lesson, the team had to decide Merlin’s fate. Even though his actions throughout the season were dangerous, the finale focused on redemption and second chances.
The Librarians gave Merlin a new job. He now works as the Library’s archivist, categorizing and preserving magical artifacts. But there is a catch – Excalibur keeps a close watch on him at all times.
Merlin made it clear to the team that if they ever needed a knowledgeable and contrite magician, he would be there to help.

Devlin made it clear he wants to continue working with Monaghan if the show gets a third season.
“Listen, the guy is an absolute joy to work with and he elevated the character and I would do anything to get more of that character.”
As of now, TNT has not officially renewed The Librarians: The Next Chapter for Season 3. But Devlin has expressed strong interest in continuing the show. He also teased that more familiar faces from the original Librarians franchise could return if the series gets another season.
The Season 2 finale aired as a two-part event. Episode 11, “And What Dreams May Come,” aired on September 6, and the finale, “And the Camelot Conundrum,” followed on September 7.
