Prime Video’s upcoming romantic comedy The Love Hypothesis has set early screenings in New York on September 16, giving select audiences a chance to watch the film a week before it arrives globally on September 23. The adaptation of Ali Hazelwood’s bestselling novel has already drawn strong reactions from early viewers, with many calling it one of the most faithful book-to-screen adaptations in recent years.
Lili Reinhart and Tom Bateman Lead the Cast
Lili Reinhart stars as Olive Smith, a third-year biology Ph.D. candidate at Stanford University. Tom Bateman plays Dr. Adam Carlsen, a young professor known for his cold demeanor. The story follows Olive as she impulsively kisses Adam to convince her best friend Ahn that she has moved on from her crush, Jeremy. What starts as a simple act of friendship turns into a fake-dating arrangement with rules and boundaries that soon blur into something real.
The film is directed by Claire Scanlon, known for her work on Set It Up and The People We Hate at the Wedding. Sarah Rothschild wrote the screenplay, and Elizabeth Cantillon serves as producer. The supporting cast includes Rachel Marsh as Ahn, Nicholas Duvernay as Jeremy, along with Jaboukie Young-White and Arty Froushan.
Early Reactions Call It a Faithful Adaptation
The first reactions to the film have been overwhelmingly positive. Influencers and critics who attended early screenings have shared their thoughts on social media, with many praising the chemistry between the leads. One attendee wrote:
I kid you not, you guys have no idea how good The Love Hypothesis movie is. This might actually be my favorite book to screen adaptation. Lili and Tom are Olive and Adam. I laughed, I giggled, I swooned, and the whole theater was right there with me.
Another viewer echoed that feeling, saying the film stays true to the spirit of the book while bringing something new to the screen.
I saw [The Love Hypothesis] a few weeks ago, and I absolutely LOVED it! As someone who read the fic when it was updating and then the book as an ARC, I can safely say this is a truly perfect adaptation of the story. Tom Bateman and Lili Reinhart have such compelling screen presence, and their chemistry is delicious.
Reinhart has also spoken about her approach to the role, noting that the team wanted to keep the heart of the book intact. During a panel at Prime Video’s Obsessed Fest in June, she said:
If you aren’t familiar, the big, important part of The Love Hypothesis and sort of the engine of the story, is that these two come together because of Olive’s loyalty to her best friend. I really enjoyed the friendship aspect.
The Novel’s Journey From Fan Fiction to Bestseller
Ali Hazelwood’s novel began as a viral Star Wars fan fiction centered on the pairing of Rey and Kylo Ren, known by fans as “Reylo.” The story was later reworked into an original romance about a Ph.D. student and a professor. The book became a New York Times bestseller and a major sensation on BookTok, helping drive demand for a film adaptation.
There is a notable connection between the film and its fan-fiction roots. Tom Bateman is married to Daisy Ridley, the actress who played Rey in the Star Wars sequel trilogy. During an interview with Elle, both actors addressed the fan-fiction origins of the story. Reinhart said:
People genuinely think that Tom and Daisy knew about this. If you knew both of them as I do—they did not know, I can tell you that with 100-percent certainty.
Bateman added that he only learned about the connection when he was offered the role and mentioned it to his wife.
