Donald Faison has shared new details about what lies ahead for Turk and Carla in Scrubs Season 2, describing their relationship as “the best couple in television history” while revealing the two challenges that will put their marriage to the test when the revival returns on September 30, 2026. The actor, who plays Dr. Christopher Turk, spoke with ScreenRant’s Tatiana Hullender about how professional burnout and a growing sense of comfort in his marriage will push his character into unfamiliar territory during the show’s sophomore season on ABC.
Turk’s Struggle With Burnout at Sacred Heart
One of the biggest challenges facing Turk in Scrubs Season 2 is his ongoing battle with professional exhaustion. Faison explained that Turk remains “burnt out at work” and is “having a really hard time motivating himself to continue to be excellent at his job.” This storyline was introduced in the revival’s series premiere, where Turk felt “no joy” in his position as Chief of Surgery at Sacred Heart Hospital. While he managed to muster enough enthusiasm to inspire one of his surgical interns, his exhaustion was not deeply explored for the rest of the first season.
The nine-episode revival premiered in February 2026 and reunited original stars Zach Braff, Sarah Chalke, and Faison as J.D., Elliot Reid, and Turk. The show’s return marked the first time the cast had appeared together in the medical comedy since the original series ended in 2010. Season 2 will now give Turk’s burnout storyline the attention it deserves, showing how the pressures of leadership affect both his professional performance and his personal life.
A Marriage That Needs Rekindling
The second challenge for Turk comes from a more personal place. Faison revealed that Turk realizes he has gotten “comfortable” in his marriage to Carla, played by Judy Reyes. Watching Zach Braff’s J.D. go “way overboard” in his new relationship with Rachel Bilson’s Charlie made Turk see something missing in his own marriage.
“I’m not doing any of this in my relationship with my wife,” Faison said, describing Turk’s realization.
The actor added that this awareness doesn’t create obstacles for Carla as much as it does for Turk. “More than anything, he wants to be with her and make her happy,” Faison explained. “And if he’s not doing that, he feels like he’s failing her.”
Choreplay and the Outcome
Turk’s determination to fix his marriage leads him to try things he would not normally do, including what Faison described as “choreplay, which is foreplay but with chores.” The actor was candid about his personal feelings on the concept.
“I do not like choreplay. This is Donald speaking now. But the outcome of what choreplay brings to the table? I’m all for that,” Faison said.
The storyline comes from a real place, as showrunner Aseem Batra revealed that some of the Turk and Carla storylines are inspired by Faison’s real-life experiences. The second season will show the couple navigating a “running storyline of the difference in all of our lives,” according to Braff, with J.D. as a bachelor again, Turk in a long-term relationship for many years, and Elliot dipping her toe in the dating waters.
A Different Kind of Couples Therapy
The Scrubs Season 2 trailer revealed that J.D. and Turk will also explore their friendship in a new way by doing their own version of couples therapy. This comedic development adds another layer to the show’s exploration of long-term relationships, showing that both romantic and platonic partnerships require work and attention.
Judy Reyes will remain a recurring cast member in Scrubs Season 2, as she also stars as Selena Soto in the fellow ABC series High Potential, which is returning for its third season. Faison continues as a series regular alongside Braff, Chalke, and Ava Bunn, who was promoted to the main cast for season 2 after recurring in season 1 as Dr. Samantha Tosh.
A Season of Contrasts and New Beginnings
The second season of the Scrubs revival will explore multiple relationship dynamics at once. While Turk and Carla work on keeping their spark alive after 25 years together, J.D. is diving headfirst into a new relationship with Charlie. Braff noted that J.D. is “in love” and going “all in,” which prompts Turk to advise his best friend to calm down.
Elliot, meanwhile, will find herself thrown off balance by the return of ex-boyfriend Sean, played again by Scott Foley. The writers brought Sean back as a way to revisit Elliot’s neuroses, according to Chalke, who said they wanted to bring back “a little bit of batsh*t crazy Elliot” that fans missed in the first season of the revival.
