Rosé Shares Her Fear of Opening Up About Love

BLACKPINK’s Rosé is gearing up for the release of her debut solo album, Rosie, and fans are eager to hear her explore deeply personal themes. However, in a candid interview with The New York Times, Rosé admitted that writing about topics like heartbreak and romance didn’t come easily, mainly due to K-Pop’s strict dating rules.

Rosé’s Fear of “Saying Too Much”

Reflecting on her songwriting process, Rosé shared her anxiety about expressing herself freely, worrying about how her words might be perceived. She explained:

“I had moments where I was like: ‘Wait, can we say this? Wait, maybe we shouldn’t put that word in there. Maybe this is too much. Should we not?’”

This hesitation stems from the K-Pop industry’s rigid norms, which discourage idols from discussing or even acknowledging romantic relationships.

The Industry’s Impact on Rosé’s Expression

When asked about the root of her fear, Rosé revealed that while her songs focus on universal emotions like heartache and lost love, she often questioned whether sharing this side of herself was acceptable.

“Can I show this side of me, and am I allowed to talk about this? But it’s not even crazy things, to be honest. It’s very normal things.”

The interview touched on the K-Pop industry’s “fan-idol fantasy,” where stars are expected to maintain an illusion of being emotionally available to fans. Rosé acknowledged that this standard influenced her hesitation, saying:

“It was not normal. It isn’t normal. But also it’s just not normal for me too. I had never really spoken about it too, because I feel like there’s no need for me to ever confirm anything or talk about it.”

Music as Art, Not a Reflection of Dating Life

Despite the challenges, Rosé made it clear that the personal themes in her album are artistic expressions, not confessions of her dating history. Her decision to explore romance, heartbreak, and other human emotions is a bold step in an industry where such openness is rare.

As fans anticipate the release of Rosie, it’s clear that Rosé’s honesty and creativity will bring a fresh perspective to her music while challenging long-standing norms in the K-Pop world.
