Krypto the Superdog, Superman’s loyal white canine with superpowers, has finally made his live-action debut in James Gunn’s 2025 Superman movie. The CGI character, voiced by an uncredited actor, is based on Gunn’s real-life rescue dog Ozu, whose mischievous antics shaped Krypto’s unruly personality in the film.

Krypto’s Real-Life Inspiration: Ozu the Rescue Dog

Director James Gunn revealed that Krypto’s behavior in the movie mirrors his own dog Ozu, a greyish pup adopted from a hoarding situation. Gunn shared that Ozu arrived as a troubled dog with no prior human interaction, leading to chaotic early days.

“Krypto was inspired by our dog Ozu, who we adopted shortly after I started writing Superman. Ozu, who came from a hoarding situation in a backyard with 60 other dogs & never knew human beings, was problematic to say the least. He immediately came in & destroyed our home, our shoes, our furniture—he even ate my laptop.”

Gunn worked with three visual effects companies, including the team behind Guardians of the Galaxy’s Rocket Raccoon, to bring Krypto to life. The dog’s movements were modeled after Gunn’s personal videos of Ozu playing with his cat.

Krypto’s Role in the New Superman Movie

In the film, Krypto serves as a funny yet heroic sidekick to David Corenswet’s Superman, often causing trouble due to his untrained nature. Unlike previous serious DC films, Gunn’s version embraces humor, with Krypto stealing scenes by chewing on furniture and playfully tackling Superman.

The movie doesn’t delve into Krypto’s comic book origin but reveals he actually belongs to Supergirl (Milly Alcock), who leaves him in Superman’s care. This sets up Alcock’s upcoming Supergirl movie, where both characters will return.

Krypto’s 70-Year Comic Book History

First appearing in 1955’s Adventure Comics #210, Krypto was created by Otto Binder, Curt Swan, and Sy Barry as Superboy’s pet. Originally a test subject for Jor-El’s rockets, Krypto’s pod drifted through space before landing on Earth, where he gained powers under Earth’s yellow sun.

Over the decades, Krypto has been:

  • A Legion of Super-Pets member (with Streaky the Supercat and Ace the Bat-Hound).
  • Temporarily erased in 1985’s Crisis on Infinite Earths reboot.
  • Reintroduced as a normal dog named by Bibbo Bibbowski in the 1990s.
  • A key player in modern comics, often teaming up with Superman and Superboy.

Fan Reactions and Future Appearances

Fans have praised Krypto’s chaotic yet endearing portrayal, with many calling him the “scene-stealer” of the film. His inclusion marks a shift toward lighter, more comic-accurate storytelling in DC’s new universe.

With Supergirl’s movie in post-production, Krypto’s live-action adventures are just beginning. Gunn’s personal connection to the character ensures he’ll remain a standout in future DC projects.
