Amazon Prime Video has officially renewed its popular crime drama Ballard for a second season. The series, which stars Maggie Q as the determined LAPD Detective Renée Ballard, will return for another season after a successful first run that saw it become a top performer for the streaming service. The renewal comes after the show’s strong viewership numbers and a significant tax credit that supported its production.
The Official Renewal and Its Catalysts
Ballard was officially renewed for a second season in early October. The cast and crew were informed of the pickup, a move that was widely anticipated by industry watchers. The show’s future was significantly bolstered when the California Film Commission awarded it a $14.84 million tax credit. This financial incentive made the production of another season in Los Angeles more feasible and greatly increased the likelihood of renewal.
The first season of Ballard was a consistent strong performer for Prime Video. According to Nielsen data, the series generated a massive 2.5 billion minutes of viewing time in the United States in the weeks following its July debut. It charted on Nielsen’s weekly Top 10 list for streaming originals for several weeks, even reaching the number four spot with 619 million minutes viewed in one week. The show also earned a perfect 100% critics’ score on Rotten Tomatoes, with praise for its crisp storytelling and Maggie Q’s performance.
What to Expect in the New Season
While specific plot details for Season 2 are being kept under wraps, the first season’s finale set the stage for a dramatic follow-up. The season ended with a major cliffhanger: Detective Renée Ballard was arrested for the murder of a fellow police officer, Robert Olivas. Olivas was shot with Ballard’s own service weapon, making her the prime suspect. This shocking turn of events suggests that a larger conspiracy within the LAPD will be a central theme moving forward.
The show’s writers have been busy developing the story for the new season. Even before the official renewal was announced, a writers’ room was active and working on the arc for Season 2. Maggie Q herself hinted at the exciting direction of the new storylines.
“Studios always have options. But we have a writers room, and they’ve been writing away. The arc for the second season is very exciting,” Maggie Q stated in a recent interview.
Fans can expect the new season to continue exploring complex cold cases while delving deeper into the personal and professional challenges faced by Ballard and her team. The dynamics within the Cold Case Unit are expected to evolve, and the arrival of new characters could introduce fresh conflicts. As part of the expanding Bosch universe, there is also potential for more crossover appearances with characters from Bosch: Legacy.
The People Behind the Show
Ballard is based on the bestselling novels by Michael Connelly and serves as a spinoff from the popular Bosch and Bosch: Legacy series. Connelly serves as an executive producer on the show. The series follows Detective Renée Ballard as she runs the LAPD’s new, underfunded cold case division. With the help of a volunteer team and her retired ally, Harry Bosch, played by Titus Welliver, she works to solve long-forgotten crimes and uncovers a dangerous conspiracy within the police force.
The ensemble cast is set to return, including Courtney Taylor as Samira Parker, Michael Mosley as Ted, John Carroll Lynch as Thomas Laffont, and Amy Hill as Tutu, Ballard’s grandmother.
Before the renewal was confirmed, Maggie Q had spoken about the unpredictable nature of the television industry, which made her cautiously optimistic about the show’s future.
“I have no sense (about renewal). This industry is not what it was before. It’s barely recognizable to me, and shows are so expendable. They can throw out a show in two seconds, and it doesn’t make a ton of difference that whole worlds and livelihoods are at stake,” she shared.
Production on the second season is expected to begin soon, though an official release date has not yet been announced by Prime Video. The first season of Ballard, consisting of 10 episodes, is available to stream in its entirety on Prime Video.
