Pixar’s chief creative officer Pete Docter has addressed the decision to remove LGBTQ themes from the studio’s 2025 animated film Elio, saying the creative team did not want to tackle subjects that young viewers might not be ready to discuss with their parents. In an interview with The Wall Street Journal, Docter explained the reasoning behind the overhaul that saw original director Adrian Molina leave the project and significant changes made to the main character .
The “Therapy” Comment That Sparked Conversation
Docter, who directed Inside Out, Up, and Monsters, Inc., told the Journal that Pixar’s job is to entertain families, not to spark complex conversations that parents may not be prepared to have. “We’re making a movie, not hundreds of millions of dollars of therapy,” Docter said .
The statement came as part of a larger profile on Pixar’s creative direction. Docter explained that the studio decided to scale back elements that might be difficult for younger audiences to process without parental guidance . According to multiple sources, this philosophy directly influenced the decision to remove subtle hints about the main character’s identity from the final version of the film .
What Was Removed From the Original Story
Elio, which premiered in June 2025, follows an 11-year-old boy who feels like an outsider on Earth and looks to the stars for friendship after being rejected by kids his own age . But early versions of the film told a slightly different story.
According to The Hollywood Reporter, the original cut—directed by Adrian Molina—included moments that suggested Elio might be queer-coded. These reportedly included a scene where Elio rides a pink bike and imagines a future with a male crush . Another version showed Elio collecting trash on the beach and turning it into a pink tank top for what he called a “trash-ion show” for a hermit crab . His bedroom also contained pictures that hinted at a same-gender crush .
Molina, who is an openly gay filmmaker and co-directed Pixar’s Oscar-winning Coco, never intended Elio to be a coming-out story, sources told The Hollywood Reporter. Because the character is only 11, the approach was meant to be subtle—showing early signs of identity exploration rather than making overt statements about sexuality . But those subtle moments were gradually removed during production following feedback from leadership .
Why the Film Underwent a Major Overhaul
The creative changes were not solely about the LGBTQ content. The film also tested poorly with audiences. According to The Wall Street Journal, early test screenings in 2023 generated weak responses, with most viewers saying they would not pay to see it in theaters . When asked whether they would watch the movie on the big screen, The Hollywood Reporter noted that “not a single hand was raised” during one screening .
That feedback prompted Docter to order a substantial reworking of the project, even though much of the animation was already complete . The overhaul led to Molina’s departure from the film in 2024 .
Directors Madeline Sharafian and Domee Shi stepped in to take over. They made extensive changes to the story and character details, including removing the elements that hinted at Elio’s sexuality . The character was made more traditionally masculine following leadership feedback .
Internal Backlash and Concerns From Staff
The changes did not sit well with everyone inside Pixar. Multiple outlets reported that the decision sparked criticism within the workforce, especially as it came around the same time that parent company Disney cut a transgender character from Pixar’s animated series Win or Lose .
An anonymous Pixar artist who worked on the film told The Hollywood Reporter that the removal of queer elements was obvious throughout production. “It was pretty clear through the production of the first version of the film that [studio leaders] were constantly sanding down these moments in the film that alluded to Elio’s sexuality of being queer,” the artist said .
Another former staffer who worked on the film expressed disappointment with the final result. “Suddenly, you remove this big, key piece, which is all about identity, and Elio just becomes about totally nothing,” the staffer told The Hollywood Reporter .
A former Pixar assistant editor, Sarah Ligatich, who provided feedback as a member of the company’s internal LGBTQ group PixPRIDE, said she was “deeply saddened and aggrieved by the changes that were made” . She also noted that multiple creatives stepped down after the new directors shared their first cut, describing an “exodus of talent” that signaled how unhappy people were with the new direction .
Cast Changes and Production Shifts
The creative overhaul also led to changes in the voice cast. America Ferrera was originally attached to voice Elio’s mother, Olga, and appeared on stage at D23 Expo in 2022 to introduce the role . But by the time Pixar returned to D23 in 2024, Ferrera had left the project. Zoe Saldaña took over the role, with the character rewritten as Elio’s aunt instead of his mother .
According to The Hollywood Reporter, Ferrera had already recorded dialogue before stepping away. Sources said her exit was connected to Molina’s departure and concerns about the direction of the project. A former Pixar artist told the outlet that “America was upset that there was no longer Latinx representation in the leadership” .
Box Office Performance and Awards Recognition
When Elio finally hit theaters in June 2025, it carried a production budget of approximately $150 million, not including global marketing costs . The film opened with roughly $20 million domestically and about $14 million from international markets, delivering one of Pixar’s weakest box office debuts .
By the end of its theatrical run, Elio had grossed around $150 million to $154 million worldwide . While that figure would be respectable for many animated films, it barely covered production costs, leaving Pixar with a financial disappointment .
Despite its box office struggles, the film earned a nomination for Best Animated Feature at the 98th Academy Awards . However, it did not win in any major categories during the 2026 awards season, despite receiving over 40 nominations overall .
A Pattern of Concerns About LGBTQ Representation
The Elio situation did not happen in a vacuum. In 2022, a group of LGBTQ employees within Pixar wrote an open letter to Disney management accusing executives of cutting “nearly every moment of overtly gay affection” from their films . The letter specifically called out Disney’s response to Florida’s so-called “Don’t Say Gay” bill and alleged that corporate reviews consistently weakened diverse representation .
“We at Pixar have personally witnessed beautiful stories, full of diverse characters, come back from Disney corporate reviews shaved down to crumbs of what they once were,” the letter stated . “Nearly every moment of overtly gay affection is cut at Disney’s behest, even when there is protest from both the creative teams and executive leadership at Pixar” .
Multiple sources have since reported that similar dynamics played out with other Pixar films. In 2022, Disney leadership reportedly placed blame for Lightyear’s financial struggles on a same-sex kiss in the film . And during production of Inside Out 2, sources claimed Pixar management ordered rewrites to ensure the main character Riley appeared “less gay”.

Docter’s Broader Vision for Pixar
Despite the controversy, Docter has remained focused on Pixar’s creative future. In the same Wall Street Journal profile, he addressed the studio’s approach to filmmaking in a challenging market. “It’s a rough time, and all we can do is try to make movies that I think are led by us. We have to believe in them,” he said .
He also pushed back against the idea of lowering standards. “If we’re going to just crank crap out, let’s shut the doors,” Docter said. “I’d rather die trying to make something that we genuinely believe in” .
The studio has announced several upcoming projects, including sequels and original stories, as well as its first-ever musical film . But for many former staff members and LGBTQ advocates, the decisions made on Elio remain a painful example of what they see as a missed opportunity.
As one anonymous Pixar artist who worked on the film told The Hollywood Reporter: “I’d love to ask Pete and the other Disney executives whether or not they thought the rewrite was worth it. Would they have lost this much money if they simply let Adrian tell his story?” .
Elio is now available on digital platforms following its theatrical release in June 2025.
