Amazon Prime Video has struck gold with its upcoming comedy-thriller series Bait, starring Academy Award winner Riz Ahmed. The show has earned a flawless 100% score on Rotten Tomatoes based on early critic reviews, placing it in an exclusive club of critically perfect television releases.

The six-episode series, which premieres March 25, 2026, follows Shah Latif, a struggling British-Pakistani actor whose life turns upside down after he auditions for the role of James Bond. What begins as a dark comedy slowly transforms into an intense psychological thriller across the four chaotic days the story covers.

Critics Praise the Bold Genre-Shifting Story

Early reviews highlight how Bait cleverly uses the real-world James Bond casting discourse as its backdrop. Critics agree the show successfully pulls off a risky tonal shift—starting with humor before tightening into psychological tension as Shah Latif’s mental state unravels.

The perfect Rotten Tomatoes score puts Bait above every James Bond film ever made, including Sean Connery’s Goldfinger, which holds a 99% rating—previously the highest in the 007 franchise. Reviewers have praised the show’s handling of identity, diaspora experience, and the psychological chaos of an actor chasing success.

“It’s comedy. It’s also trying to look at some emotional things. It’s about family, it’s about ambition, it’s about trying to belong,” Ahmed told GQ about the series.

Star-Studded Premiere Celebrates South Asian Talent

Days before the streaming debut, Ahmed hosted a premiere event in London that brought together a vibrant mix of South Asian musicians, comedians, and creatives. Grammy winner Arooj Aftab, singer Natasha Noorani, and chart-topping artist Jay Sean attended the celebration.

Jay Sean performed a new track called “Pulling Me Back” during the event, adding to the night’s entertainment. Comedian Hasan Minhaj and cultural commentator Jasmine Wahi were also spotted at the premiere, with Wahi posting on Instagram: “This isn’t an ad, I just really enjoyed the show and the tamasha! And creative work that highlights the specific experiences of the Subcontinental diaspora should be amplified (when they’re good!).”

Full Cast and Release Details

Bait features an ensemble cast including:

  • Guz Khan (Man Like Mobeen) as Shah’s cousin Zulfi
  • Ritu Arya (The Umbrella Academy) as his ex-girlfriend Yasmin
  • Sheeba Chaddha as Tahira
  • Sajid Hasan as Parvez
  • Aasiya Shah as Q
  • Weruche Opia (I May Destroy You) as Felicia

Ahmed serves as co-creator, writer, executive producer, and showrunner alongside Ben Karlin (The Daily Show). The series comes from Jax Media and Amazon MGM Studios, with Ahmed’s production company Left Handed Films also backing the project.

All six episodes arrive March 25, 2026, on Prime Video in more than 240 countries and territories. The full season drops at once, allowing viewers to binge the complete story in one sitting.

The Real-Life Parallels

The show draws inspiration from the actual James Bond casting speculation that has circled Hollywood for years. Ahmed’s own name appeared in bookmaker odds during the post-Daniel Craig Bond search, though he downplays the personal connection.

“I think, to be fair, probably 10,000 different people’s names have been associated with [Bond],” Ahmed told GQ. “For Shah, [Bond] is the ultimate symbol of success and acceptance. Of cinematic achievement, alpha masculinity. He’s everything that he wishes he was, and is not.”

The series also tackles darker themes. When news of Shah’s potential casting spreads, a severed pig’s head is thrown through his Muslim parents’ window—a moment that signals the racist backlash to come and marks the shift toward thriller territory.

What Makes This Different

Unlike conventional thrillers that front-load tension, Bait builds its pressure deliberately. Critics note the show’s dark comedy opening lowers viewers’ guard before the psychological weight takes over in later episodes.

The show’s title reflects this structural choice—the comedy serves as bait, drawing audiences in before revealing the full scope of Shah Latif’s unraveling mental state. Early reviews suggest the payoff lands effectively, with Ahmed’s performance anchoring the genre-defying narrative.

Patrick Stewart appears in an undisclosed role that Ahmed calls “unexpected” and “prominent,” with the actor noting Stewart was their first choice and had “never read anything quite like this.”
