The fourth episode of Marshals turned up the heat on Kayce Dutton (Luke Grimes) from two directions. Just as he was dealing with a new legal threat from the Clegg family, he found himself on a high-risk mission in the Montana wilderness alongside Pete (Logan Marshall-Green). The episode, titled “The Gathering Storm,” delivered major character moments, a surprising family secret, and the first hint of a new romance for the widowed Kayce.
The episode aired on CBS on March 22, 2026, and is available for streaming on Paramount+. Here is a detailed recap of everything that happened.
Randall Clegg Files Complaint Against Kayce
The fallout from Episode 3 lands directly on Kayce’s doorstep. Randall Clegg (Michael Cudlitz), whose son Carson was killed in the shootout, takes a legal approach to get revenge. He files a formal complaint with the Department of Justice, claiming that Kayce violated his son’s civil rights. Randall insists that Carson had already dropped his weapon when Kayce fired the fatal shot.
Chief Marshal Harry Gifford (Brett Cullen) uses the complaint to sideline Kayce. He puts Andrea Cruz (Ash Santos) in charge of an internal investigation. Gifford pressures Cruz to dig into Kayce’s past, hinting that if she finds a reason to remove him, it could speed up her transfer to Washington, D.C. He specifically warns about “Dutton skeletons” that could destroy the team’s reputation.
The investigation forces Belle Skinner (Arielle Kebbel) and Miles Kittle (Tatanka Means) to search through Kayce’s history. They uncover the story of when Tate was kidnapped by a militia group during Yellowstone Season 2. Kayce led a rescue mission that involved what the team calls “frontier justice.” The timing raises questions because John Dutton resigned as Livestock Commissioner shortly after that event.
Just as Gifford prepares to fire Kayce, the team finds a break in the case. They locate trail camera footage from a college student in Missoula. The video clearly shows Carson Clegg holding and firing a weapon when Kayce returned fire. The evidence clears Kayce and makes Randall Clegg’s complaint look like a deliberate attempt to sabotage the marshal.
Kayce and Pete Join Forces on Rescue Mission
While the investigation swirls, Kayce gets pulled into a different kind of crisis. Pete asks for his help on a search and rescue operation. A rancher named Tom Weaver (Chris Mulkey) and his helicopter pilot have gone missing after sending an SOS. High winds have grounded all ranger helicopters, so the search must happen on horseback and foot.
Kayce and Pete head into the wilderness, which happens to be near the former Yellowstone Ranch. As they track the missing pair, a homeless man surprises them and holds them at gunpoint. He wants supplies to continue living off the land. Since they cannot detain him, they tell him to turn himself in at the ranger station. Both men doubt he will actually go.
They eventually find the crashed helicopter. The pilot has a tree branch lodged in her body, and Tom Weaver is trapped with his leg stuck in the wreckage. Before they can fully assess the situation, a grizzly bear appears and shakes the helicopter. The movement kills the pilot. Kayce manages to scare the bear away by firing his gun and shouting.
With the pilot gone, the focus shifts to getting Tom Weaver out alive. They have to break his leg to free him from the twisted metal. During the rescue, the homeless man returns, this time carrying a shotgun he took from Pete’s horse. He fires at them but misses. The team later identifies him as Rudy Carpenter, a serial bomber who has been on the run for three years.
Cal Reveals His Connection to the Bartender
The episode also solved a mystery that has been building since the series began. Pete has spent several episodes at the local bar, the Bullet ’n Barrel Saloon, exchanging tense and awkward words with the bartender Maddie (Morgan Lindholm). Viewers could tell there was history between them, but the show kept the reason hidden.
In Episode 4, Pete finally opens up to Belle. While watching Tom Weaver and his daughter Dolly (Ellyn Jameson) share a close moment, Pete admits the truth.
“The bartender’s my kid. Been out of her life for more than 20 years. I took this posting to move closer to her, but it’s becoming clear she’d rather have me out of her life than in her bar.”
The confession reframes all of Maddie’s earlier hostility. She is not just a bartender annoyed by a customer. She is a daughter dealing with the pain of an absent father. Belle offers simple but meaningful advice, telling Pete to “give it time.”
Showrunner Spencer Hudnut explained to TV Insider that Pete did not plan to share the secret at that moment. But seeing Dolly and Tom Weaver’s close bond made him regret the relationship he does not have with his own daughter. Hudnut also noted that Pete chose to tell Belle because she is a parent and would understand the complexities of balancing work and family.

Kayce Steps Out With Dolly Weaver
The biggest surprise of the episode came at the very end. After the rescue mission, Tom Weaver ends up in the hospital. Kayce visits him to return his cowboy hat and share important information about the land Weaver purchased. Kayce tells him that he cannot move cattle onto the property for two more seasons, which saves Weaver millions of dollars. In return, Weaver offers to send ranch hands to help Kayce and Tate at East Camp.
But the real story is Tom Weaver’s daughter, Dolly. She appears during the rescue search and is clearly grateful for Kayce’s help in saving her father. The gratitude takes a different turn later when the team goes to the bar to celebrate clearing Kayce’s name. After repeated encouragement from his teammates to join them for a night out, Kayce shows up. He does not come alone.
Dolly is with him. She buys a round of drinks for the team and spends time talking with Kayce. The two share easy, flirtatious banter. When Dolly asks if Kayce might teach her more about Montana, he does not say yes or no. Instead, he gives a teasing, mysterious answer: “Maybe.”
Andrea Cruz notices the chemistry immediately, telling Kayce, “I know what grateful looks like, and that’s not how she’s eyeing you. Saddle up, cowboy.”
This marks the first time since Monica’s death that the show has introduced a potential romantic interest for Kayce Dutton. Whether he will follow through on the connection remains to be seen in future episodes.
